반대 극성 대용 동사 ‘그러다’ 구문 연구 = A Study on the Opposite Polarity Pro-Verb kule- Construction in Korean

This paper aims to examine theformal and semantic properties of the -l kes-ul kule- construction and the -ci kuleconstruction,focusing on the phenomenon whereby kule- is interpreted with oppositepolarity, unlike a general pro-verb kule-, when it occurs in -l kes-ul kule- and -ci kule-. The main findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, the -l kes-ul kuleconstructionexpresses the speaker’s regret or sense of disappointment regarding anaction that the speaker or another person performed or failed to perform in the past. The-l kes-ul kule- construction frequently co-occurs with counterfactual conditionalexpressions; in particular, the occurrence of the adjective coh- together with -ess- in thisconstruction is analyzed as a coercion phenomenon involving the integration of thecounterfactual conditional construction -ess-u-myen/ess-ta-myen/ess-te-la-myen cohandthe -l kes-ul kule- construction. Second, kule- in the -ci kule- construction is likewiseinterpreted with opposite polarity, and in particular as a rhetorical question, such that the construction as a whole is understood as conveying a strong proposal or directive from the speaker to the addressee.
