This study examines the Stone Standing Avalokiteśvara statue discovered at Mt. Nangsan in Gyeongju, focusing on the religious significance of Mt. Nangsan and the development of Avalokiteśvara worship in the region, while also analyzing the stylistic characteristics and estimated date of the sculpture. Mt. Nangsan, located to the east of the Silla royal capital, had long been regarded as a sacred mountain associated with indigenous religious beliefs and state rituals. After the construction of Queen Seondeok’s royal tomb, the mountain gradually acquired strong Buddhist associations, and with the establishment of Sacheonwangsa Temple during the reign of King Munmu, Mt. Nangsan became an important Buddhist sacred landscape reflecting cosmological concepts of Buddhism. In addition, several temples—including Sacheonwangsa Temple, Hwangboksa Temple, Mangdeoksa Temple, and the site of Neungjitap—were built around the mountain, forming a significant Buddhist center within the Silla capital.
Historical records in the Samguk Yusa indicate that Avalokiteśvara worship flourished in the area around Jungsaengsa Temple, suggesting that Mt. Nangsan functioned as an important center of Avalokiteśvara devotion during the Unified Silla period. The discovery of two large Avalokiteśvara statues—the Stone Standing Avalokiteśvara and the Eleven-headed Avalokiteśvara statue at Mt. Nangsan—provides important material evidence supporting this interpretation.
The Stone Standing Avalokiteśvara statue, measuring approximately 3.86 meters in height, is one of the largest known Avalokiteśvara sculptures in Korea. The statue displays distinctive stylistic features of Unified Silla Buddhist sculpture, including elongated body proportions, a tribhaṅga-like posture, naturalistic drapery, and a realistic hand gesture holding a kundika (water bottle), an attribute commonly associated with Avalokiteśvara. A comparison with contemporary bodhisattva sculptures suggests that the statue inherits stylistic elements from the late 7th to early 8th century while exhibiting more refined and natural sculptural expressions. Based on these stylistic comparisons, the statue is estimated to have been produced between the early and mid-8th century.
Given its monumental scale and the absence of associated statues found nearby, the sculpture may not have functioned merely as a flanking bodhisattva but rather as a principal object of worship within a temple context. The statue therefore represents an important example illustrating both the flourishing of Avalokiteśvara devotion and the development of Buddhist sculpture during the Unified Silla period. More broadly, the Stone Standing Avalokiteśvara of Mt. Nangsan provides valuable insight into the relationship between sacred landscape, Buddhist belief, and sculptural production in the Silla royal capital.
