씨받이의 실재와 재현 - 다큐멘터리 영화 <춘희막이>(2015) 속 새로운 가족실행의 가능성 = The Reality and Representation of Ssibaji - Alternative Family Practices in With or Without You(2015)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 2015년에 개봉한 다큐멘터리 영화 <춘희막이>를 한국의 공고한 정상 가족 담론 속에서 새로운 가능성을 드러내는 역동적인 텍스트로 분석한다. 영화는 과거 관습적으로 허용되었던 가족실행 방식 중 하나인 ‘씨받이’를 다루고 있다. 이 글은 가족담론의 역사적 맥락과 함께 씨받이라는 존재가 한국의 규범적 가족 서사를 교란해 온 현장에 주목한다. 특히, <춘희막이> 속 두 여성이 맺어 온 관계에 집중하며, 그들이 공통의 신체적 경험을 기반으로 연대하고 있다는 점에 근거해 몸을 매개로 한 타자 인식과 공감의 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.
1950년대 이래 축첩제 폐지가 논의되는 법률적 맥락과 더불어 1987년 개봉한 영화 <씨받이>는 씨받이라는 존재에 대한 부정적인 인식을 강화했다. 전후 한국 사회의 규범 속에서 씨받이는 지양되어야 할 존재로 간주되었으나, 실제 가족 구성의 현장에서는 완전히 사라지지 않았다. <춘희막이>가 조명하고 있는 두 여성은 본처와 씨받이의 관계로, 정상 가족 담론이 형성되는 과정 속에서도 비공식적으로 지속되어 온 혼외관계의 실재를 드러낸다. 영화는 분명히 존재했으나 가시화되지 않았던 가족 구성의 현실을 드러내는 한편 진정한 연대의 조건을 암시한다. 남성 중심의 가족제도 아래 신체적 재생산을 매개로 연결된 두 여성의 삶은, 공통된 몸의 경험에 기반한 연대로 해석될 수 있다.
2000년대 이후에 등장한 다큐멘터리 텍스트들은 씨받이에 대한 인식과 심상의 변화를 소구하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다. 특히 <춘희막이>가 조명하는 두 여성의 관계는 사적 영역, 즉 한 가정의 문턱 안에서 시작되었음에도 불구하고 법적 인정과 정상 가족 담론을 초월하는 또 다른 가족실행의 가능성을 보여준다. 비공식적이며 비혈연 관계의 두 여성이 수십 년간 서로를 돌보며 이어온 삶은, 돌봄이 더 이상 제도적 가족이나 혈연관계에 국한되지 않음을 시사한다. 재생산의 도구로만 호명되었던 두 여성이 공통된 역할과 경험을 매개로 연대한 사실은 가족과 돌봄의 구조를 재사유하도록 만든다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes the 2015 documentary film With or Without You as a dynamic text that reveals new possibilities within the entrenched discourse of normative family structures in South Korea. The film addresses the historically customary family practice known as “ssibaji” (surrogate motherhood). This study focuses on the historical context of family discourse and the ways in which the existence of ssibaji has disrupted Korea’s normative family narratives. In particular, it concentrates on the relationship between the two women depicted in With or Without You, proposing the potential for otherness recognition and empathy mediated through their shared embodied experience.
Since the 1950s, the legal context surrounding the abolition of polygamy has been under discussion, and the 1987 film The Surrogate Womb further reinforced negative perceptions of ssibaji. While ssibaji was regarded as an undesirable figure within the postwar social norms of Korea, their presence was never entirely erased from the realities of family formations. The two women highlighted in With or Without You represent the relationship between the legal wife and the ssibaji, an extramarital relationship that continued openly in practice even after the legal prohibition of polygamy. The film reveals a family configuration that undeniably existed but was suppressed from visibility, while simultaneously implying conditions for genuine solidarity. Furthermore, it questions how two women, connected through bodily functions under a male-centered family system, formed bonds outside the boundaries of social convention.
Documentary texts that have emerged since the 2000s demand attention for their appeal to shifts in perceptions and imagery regarding ssibaji. In particular, the relationship between the two women depicted in With or Without You—though confined to the private realm of a single household—demonstrates the possibility of new forms of family practice that transcend legal recognition and normative family discourse. The fact that these two women, who constitute an unofficial and non-kin family, have maintained a caregiving relationship for decades suggests that care is no longer limited to familial or blood ties. Their solidarity, grounded in a shared embodied experience rather than merely as reproductive subjects, presents a significant case for rethinking family and care structures.
