The belief in karma becomes the fundamental premise in the majority of India"s religious and philosophical tradition. So, the study of karma makes it possible to understand all philosophical traditions in India. In this paper, I shed light on the development of karma conception, especially from the ritualism to early Buddhism. I think the beliefs in karma had been gradually embodied as time went by. It was discovered from the ritualistic views of karma in Veda that human had the ability to take part in the cosmic process through ritualistic deeds. Upani?ad contributed to concretize the idea that a human being"s deeds are completely connected with specific purposes and results. Jainism had a great notion that karma is retributive, thinking of it as a law of physics. Futhermore, this conception was interpreted as the psychological matter in early buddhism. This interpretation contributed to overcome both the occlusiveness of Vedic ritualism and the asceticism of Jainism. In this way, I straightened out that the conception of karma was not complete at the first step. I think that we have to put this conception into the more opened place of academic discussion, and that this attempt may be helpful for understanding the boundaries of thought on Karma within the major schools of Indian philosophy.
