애니메이션 속 변신과 그로테스크 미학－디즈니 작품을 중심으로－ = Metamorphosis and Grotesque aestheticsin Animation －Focusing on Disney－

This study aims to study the "metamorphosis motif" that penetrates Disney short and Disney-Pixar features created over a century from 1923 to 2023. To this end, we examine the early forms and characteristics of metamorphosis that appear in short animations of the early 20th century, the changes in the metamorphosis motif over the next century in the feature era, and the close connection with the grotesque aesthetics revealed in the media use of this motif.
The relationship between the motif of metamorphosis and animation dates back to the 17th century Magic Lantern, also called the Metamorphosis Machine. First, we look at how fantastic and grotesque motifs of metamorphosis appear in the Magic Lantern during this pre-Disney period, And through the experimental period of the early 20th century video, (Cole's metamorphic sequences at the head) we will look at how the effects and expressions are settled in Disney shorts. On the other hand, the expression of the metamorphosis motif in Disney shorts quite visibly reveals the relationship between metamorphosis and the grotesque. To explain this relationship, this study briefly approaches grotesque aesthetics in four aspects. In addition, based on discussions by modern theorists who were fascinated by Disney short animations, such as Benjamin, Panofsky, and Eisenstein, we examine the social functions involved by Disney short animations related to the aforementioned aesthetic characteristics.
One of the main characteristics of the 20th century's feature-length era is the acceptance of literature, which also changes the metamorphosis motif. In other words, the horror-comedy emotions, tremendous physical exaggeration, robustness, and community elements that were involved in the metamorphosis of short animation are replaced by a metamorphosis of literary characteristics and a phase of personal identity change. The 21st century is a time when the use of metamorphosis motifs is rapidly growing. This study focuses on another aspect that appeared in the metamorphosis motif of the 21st century, a new attempt to overcome the feature of the 20th century, let’s look at that transitional phase.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1923년에서 2023년 현재까지 한 세기 걸쳐 창출된 디즈니의 장･단편을 관통하는 ‘변신(metamorphosis)의 모티프’를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 초기 영상 매체에서 어떻게 변신의 모티프들이 나타나는지를 앞서 살피며, ‘메타모르포시스 기계’로도 불렸던 17세기 매직랜턴의 환상적이고 그로테스크한 이미지들의 등장과 이를 직·간접적으로 잇는 20세기 초 전-디즈니 시기의 실험적인 단편 애니메이션에서의 변신 모티프들의 특징을 파악한다. 선행된 영상들은 디즈니의 초기 단편 효과와 표현 형식 및 변신 모티프의 발전 양상을 이해하는 데 중요한 자료를 제공한다. 이와 더불어 애니메이션에서의 변신 모티프와 그로테스크의 긴밀한 관계성을 내밀히 지시하며, 이는 디즈니 단편 시대(1930-37)를 통해 가시적으로 드러난다. 본 연구는 그로테스크의 일부 특성을 도출함으로써 전술한 관계성을 고찰하는 한편, 그로테스크가 또한 애니메이션의 미학적 토대가 될 수 있음을 또한 부분적으로 논의한다. 더불어, 벤야민, 파노프스키, 예이젠시테인과 같은 현대 이론가들의 논의를 살펴보며 단편 애니메이션에서 표출된 그로테스크한 요소들의 사회적 기능을 고찰한다. 한편, 1937년대 이후는 디즈니의 장편 시대이다. 장편의 주요 특징 중 하나는 문학의 수용이며 이것은 변신 모티프에도 주목할 만한 변화를 초래한다. 그리고 21세기 변신 모티프는 급성장하고 있는 활용적 차원에서나 표출 방식에 있어서 또 다른 변화의 추세를 보인다. 본 연구는 따라서 20세기의 변화 양상에 이어, 아직은 초기적이지만, 이를 넘어서고자 하는 21세기의 차별화된 국면에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.
