메리 로쓰: 여성, 문학, 스토아사상

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 저서는 르네상스 시대에 부흥한 스토아 사상의 맥락에서 17세기 영국 여성 작가 메리 로쓰의 소네트 연작 "팸필리아가 앰필란써스에게"와 로맨스 "유래이니어"을 연구한다. 특히 두 작품에서 주요 인물들이 자아를 성찰하며 스토아적 항심을 갈망하고 진정한 자아를 찾아가는 과정을 면밀히 짚어가며 로쓰의 스토아 정신 변용을 살펴본다. 그리하여 르네상스 유럽 지성인들 사이에 정치적, 철학적, 윤리적 실용적 지침이었던 스토아 정신이 로쓰의 여성적 관점을 통해 변용되어 나타나는 특성들과 양상들을 조명하여 그의 문학 세계의 르네상스 인문학적 가치를 밝히고자 시도한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This book studies Mary Wroth’s sonnet sequence “Pamphilia to Amphilanthus” and prose romance “Urania” in the context of Stoicism(New-stoicism) which had provided the Renaissance Europeans with the important guiding principles in political, philosophical, moral, and real-life areas. Particularly, tracing the major characters’ pursuits of constant self based on Stoic constancy, it explores Wroth’s transformation of masculine Stoic ideals from her female point of view. Thereby, this book tries to position Wroth not just as an Early Modern English woman writer but as a Renaissance humanist writer in the Early Modern English literary history.
