경계, 그 틈을 바라보는 예술교육 = Art Education Looking at the Boundaries

국문 초록 (Abstract)

소위 취업률로 학교를 평가하는 시스템에서 살아남기 위해 대학들은 앞다투어 취업률이 낮은 인문대, 예술대를 구조조정하기에 이르고 해당 학과들은 학교에 도움이 안 되는 골칫거리로 전락하게 되었다. 그나마 예술대의 저항에 교육부 평가에서 예술대를 제외 시키게 되었지만 그렇다고 교육에 대한 철학이 바뀐 것은 아니었다. 이제 경제학 이론의 ‘메기효과’처럼 우리는 실체 없는 메기의 위협에서 혼자만 살아남기 위해 끊임없이 공포에 떨며 발버둥 쳐야 하는 현실로 내몰렸다. 물론 정부의 시책과 경쟁이 신격화된 사회만 탓할 수는 없다. 교수자들은 현재의 대학에서 가르치고 있는 교육의 가치와 철학에 대해 얼마만큼 고민했는가 반성하고 되돌아볼 필요가 있다. 천편 일률적인 교과목명과 미학적, 예술적 가치를 상실한 기술교육이 영화교육의 위기를 가져온 것을 아닐지, 그에 대한 책임은 교수들에게 없는지 자문할 때이다. 중요한 것은 연출과 촬영의 기술, 편집과 사운드의 툴(tool) 교육이 아니라 왜 인간사회에 영화라는 예술이 필요한가, 그 역할은 무엇이고 그 목적에 다가가기 위해 어떤 철학과 가치로 무장해야 하는가에 대한 고민이 아닐런지 숙고할 시점에 다가왔다. 여기서 우리는 다시 본질적 질문과 마주해보자. 왜 예술교육이 필요한가.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the system that evaluates schools based on employment rates, universities have undergone restructuring to survive, often leading to the marginalization of humanities and arts departments with lower employment rates. Despite some resistance, arts departments were even excluded from education ministry evaluations. However, this does not signify a change in the philosophical approach to education. Now, we find ourselves immersed in a reality where, akin to the economic theory of the Mickey Mouse effect, we must constantly struggle and fret in the face of a non-existent threat to survive alone.
Certainly, the blame cannot be solely placed on government policies and intensified societal competition. It is crucial for professors to reflect on and reconsider the values and philosophy of education they are imparting in today's universities. It is time to question whether the crisis in film education, marked by uniform course titles and the loss of aesthetic and artistic values in technical education, could be attributed to a lack of contemplation and responsibility among educators. The essential question arises: is film education solely about imparting technical skills in directing, cinematography, editing, and sound, or should it delve into the reasons why the art of film is essential in human society, its role, and the philosophy and values necessary to approach its purpose?
Now is the time to ponder on these fundamental questions. Why is art education necessary?
