그림책의 글 서사 완결성에 관한 고찰 - 『백두산 이야기』의 세 판본을 중심으로 = A Study on the Completion of the Narrative of Picture Books - on the Three Editions of The Story of Baekdu Mountain

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 한국의 첫 창작 그림책으로 평가받는 류재수의 『백두산 이야기』가 두 차례 판갈이를 하면서 글 서사가 어떻게 변하는지 설명하고, 그러한 변화의 배경이 무엇인지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 따라서 글과 그림의 조화로운 결합으로 새로운 의미를 창출하는 그림책에서 글 서사의 완결성이 제대로 구현되었는지 서술하고자 한다.
『백두산 이야기』의 초판은 1988년 ‘통나무’에서 발행되었다. 그 후 2009년 ‘보림’에서 개정신판이 발행되고, 초판이 발행된 지 30년이 지난 2018년에 30주년 기념 한정판이 발행되었다. 초판, 개정신판, 30주년 기념 한정판을 거치면서 그림 서사는 변화하지 않지만, 글 서사에 큰 변화가 일어난다. 등장인물의 이름과 역할이 바뀌고, 서사의 흐름이 확연하게 달라지며, 노랫말이 삭제되고, 글의 자리가 바뀐다. 또 문장 수정이 빈번하게 일어난다. 일반적으로 개정판을 펴낼 때 하는 오탈자 수정을 넘어서 문장을 전면적으로 고친 부분이 적지 않다. 개정이라기보다 개작에 가까운 수정이다.
『백두산 이야기』에서 글 서사만 떼어 내어 하나의 신화로 구성하면, 그림이 없어도 서사 구조가 완성된다. 글을 떼어 내고 그림만 있으면, 등장인물과 사건을 특정할 수 없어 서사 구조를 이해하기 어려워진다. 그런 의미로 개정판을 낼 때 글 서사가 수정된 이유를 밝히는 것이 좋았을 것이다. 그런데 작가 류재수는 단순히 10여 년의 시간 경과에 따른 자연스러운 생각의 변화가 글 수정의 이유라고 밝힌다.
그림책은 글과 그림이라는 두 개의 의사소통 방식으로 조화를 이루어내는 독특한 예술 형식이다.(마리아 니콜라예바 & 캐롤 스콧) 그런데 『백두산 이야기』에 대한 긍정적 평가가 그림에 한정되어서는 안 될 것이다. 출간된 지 34년이 지난 지금까지 글 서사의 완결성에 대한 평가와 논의가 없다는 점은 아쉽다. 한국 그림책 역사에서 『백두산 이야기』가 갖는 위상을 고려할 때 『백두산 이야기』 글 서사의 완결성을 분석하는 것은 한국 창작 그림책의 미래를 위한 의미 있는 과정이 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to explain how the narrative of writing changes while Ryu Jaesoo’s The Story of Baekdu Mountain, which is regarded as Korea’s first creative picture book, is changed twice, and to examine the background of such change. Therefore, I would like to describe whether the completeness of the narrative of writing is properly realized in the picture book that creates a new meaning through harmonious combination of writing and painting. Then, in 2009, a new edition was issued in Borim, and a limited edition of the 30th anniversary was issued in 2018, 30 years after the first edition was issued. Through the first edition, the revised new edition, and the 30th anniversary limited edition, the picture narrative does not change, but a big change occurs in the narrative of the article. The characters’ names and roles change, the narrative flows change, the lyrics are deleted, and the place of the writing changes. In general, there are a few parts that have completely correct the sentence beyond the correction of the misleadings when publishing the revised edition. It is a revision that is more like an amendment than a re-creation.
Picture books are unique art forms that harmonize with two communication methods of writing and painting.(Maria Nikolajeva & Carol Scott) But the positive assessment of The Story of Baekdu Mountain should not be limited to the picture. It is regrettable that there is no evaluation and discussion on the completeness of the narrative until 34 years after it was published. Considering the status of The Story of Baekdu Mountain in history of Korean picture books, analyzing the completeness of the narrative of The Story of Baekdu Mountain will be a meaningful process for the future of history of korean creative picture books.
