The purpose of this study was to investigate the sealing effect in the thermoplasticized injection-molded gutta-percha canal obturation comparing with vertical condensation of warm gutta-percha and thermoplsaticized low-temperature(70℃)gutta-percha obturation.
The 150 palatal roots were obtained by cutting off from extracted maxillary molars, and the root canals were prepared sequentially to size #45 by using step-back method and divided into 6 groups according to the purpose of this study.
The prepared canals were obturated by vertical condensation of warm gutta-percha method, thermoplasticized injection-molded gutta-percha method and thermoplasticized low-temperature(70℃)gutta-percha method with or without sealer.
All specimens were immersed in India ink for 7 days at 37℃ incubator and measured the dye penetration into the root canals.
The obtained data were statistically evaluated using one-way ANOVA and LSD(Least Significant Difference)in multiple comparison test.
The results were as follows:
When sealer were combined, the canals obturated with thermoplasticized injection-molded gutta-percha by Obtura system showed a ink penetration significantly greater than the canals obturated with thermoplasticized low-temperature(70℃)gutta-percha by Ultrafil system(p<0.01)and slightly greater than the canals obturated with warm gutta-percha of vertical condensation without statistical significance(p>0.05).
When sealer was not used, the canals obturated by Obtura system produced a dye penetration significantly greater than the canals obturated by vertical condensation method and the canals by Ultrafil system(p<0.01).
Statistical analysis of the data indicated that the canals obturated in conjunction with sealer demonstrated less dye penetration than the canals obturated without sealer(p<.005).
The thermoplasticized low-temperature(70℃)gutta-percha method appeared comparable sealing ability to the vertical condensation of warm gutta-percha.
