Based on the cognitive theory of emotion, this study analyzes modern Korean novels from the 1960s and 1970s to explore directions for novel education that can cultivate learners’ emotional literacy. While literary research has long been viewed emotions as the opposite of reason or dismissed them as subjective fallacies, recent cognitive theories have redefined emotion as a cognitive process in which human judgment and value interpretation converge. From this perspective, novel reading must be reconceptualized as going beyond simple appreciation or empathy to a form of emotional literacy practice, in which the recognition, interpretation, judgment, and expression of emotion interact in complex ways.
This paper identifies the “structures of feeling” embodied in novels from the 1960s and 1970s, a period marked by intense social pressure from industrialization and urbanization. Specifically, it analyzes the “anger” and “fear” arising from structural violence in Cho Se-hui’s The Dwarf Who Shoots a Little Ball and the “helplessness” and “shame” of urbanites in Kim Seung-ok’s Seoul, 1964 Winter and Record of a Journey to Mujin. Furthermore, it highlights the ethical value of “guilt” linked to a sense of responsibility toward others through Yi Cheong-jun’s Snowy Road. These emotions function as narrative devices that reveal the contradictions of contemporary society and the ethical positioning of the subject, beyond mere individual psychological responses.
This study proposes an emotional literacy education plan that organizes novel-based emotion analysis into the following stages: recognition and naming, social contextualization, value judgment, and expression and reflection. By critically exploring the social backgrounds and narrative contexts in which emotions are formed, rather than simply identifying with characters, learners can reach a profound understanding of others and the world. This serves as a practical foundation for literary education to integrate cognitive understanding with emotional reflection, ultimately supporting learners’ autonomous lives and ethical growth.
