은유의 이중 재현 구조 = Dual Representational Structure of Metaphor

If metaphors are vehicles of meaning, they can be considered representation. However, it is arguable whether metaphors are representation or not. To begin with, this paper compares two opposite positions, truth conditional semantics and cognitive linguistics, with regard to the status of metaphor as representation, and ciriticizes the limits of both of them. Danto recognizes and explains the representational peculiarity of metaphor, that is metaphor does not simply represent something but also represents the way in which something is represented. However, Danto's theory of metaphor also has a limitation that metaphor is at the end reduced to mental phenomenon. I will argue that metaphor has complex representational structure in which two kinds of representation, one as mental phenomena and the other as vehicle of meaning, interact.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

은유가 의미 전달 기능을 할 수 있다고 보는지 여부에 따라 은유는 재현으로 간주될 수도 있고 그렇지 않을 수도 있다. 그러나 재현으로서의 은유에 대한 논의는 단지 은유가 의미를 전달하는지 여부를 고려해야 할 뿐 아니라 어떠한 방식으로 재현하는지도 고려해야 한다. 이 글에서는 은유를 단순히 의미 전달 가능성의 측면에서 분석하는 진리조건 의미론과 인지 언어학적 관점을 살펴보고 두 입장 모두 은유의 재현적 특성을 제대로 드러내지 못한다고 비판할 것이다. 나아가 은유의 경우 재현 여부뿐 아니라 재현 방식도 고려해야 한다는 단토의 주장을 소개한다. 재현 방식에 대한 고려의 필요성은 인정할 수 있으나 그러한 고려의 결과, 은유가 단지 심적 현상으로 환원된다는 점에서 단토의 이론도 문제가 있음을 지적할 것이다. 은유의 경우 심적 현상으로서의 표상이라는 개념과 의미 전달 매체로서의 재현이라는 개념이 함께 작용하는 복합적인 재현 구조를 갖고 있다고 주장할 것이다.
