The research topic of the article is around Luo Huixi and Bing Xin’s novels who are Korean and Chinese representative women writers in the 1830s. By the comparative analysis of the colorful women figures in these two women writers’ works, it digs and exploits the deep meanings that these two women writers want to express through these characters.
Both Luo Huixi and Bing Xin are the top women writers on their national literature in the 1820s. Luo Huixi (1896-1948) developed her lively literary activities by publishing Ideal Wife in The Light of Learning in 1914. So far there have been 61 essays, argumentations and prose, four poems, one play and so on known by people. She is not such being famous as a woman writer as being the original woman painter in the history of modern art. However her literary works are no less than her painting values, which have distinctive values. She was rated the pioneer in modern Korean literature, and the symbolic figure of women’s liberation movement in the civilized age.
Bing Xin (1900-1999), the famous woman writer in current Chinese literature, entered the literary circle by writing problem novels aiming at revealing women problems. She created over 1000 works including poems, prose, novels, translations and the like in near one century period of her life. The literature of Bing Xin usually uses simple situations to reflect social conditions, and puts forward the solutions of social problems. She is often rated the first generation’s woman novelist in the history of Chinese modern literature, or the first generation’s pioneer in the Chinese modern literature, the founder of Chinese women literature and so on.
The article will first recall the history and present situation of Korean and Chinese literature in the introduction, then discuss the two women writers’ previous researches and find out the flaws, afterwards come up with the objective of this research. At the same time, indicate the scope and method of the research, and the significance of comparing the development of literature.
The second chapter puts forward time background and social background of Korea and China in the 1810s to 1830s. Both Luo Huixi and Bing Xin were born in a rich, feudal, bureaucrat families, studied aboard when they were young, made great efforts to liberate women and develop women culture after they came back home, can be viewed as the pioneers of the two countries in modern literature. It is because of the same social background that they lived in the 1810s to 1830s, the status in their countries’ literature history, the motivation of their literary creation, the abundant contents and colorful forms of their work that provide a great possibility to carry out the research.
The third chapter mainly researches a series of women characters of the two writers’ works, which can be divided into five parts: authoritative women in the patriarchy, ignorant women oppressed by feudal conventions, those women that cannot gain independence, weak intellectual women, and new women as an understanding wife and loving mother.
The fourth chapter chiefly discusses the similarities and differences of a set of women characters that are shaped by the two women writers. It is just like that they made an appointment to shape similar characters. They deeply criticize the feudal customs and institutions rooted by Confusion tradition, shows the consciousness of enlightenment and emancipation of women. But there are some differences in their method of creation because their experiences have some little differences.
The conclusion makes an arrangement about the analysis of the above content, demonstrates the significance of the research again, and comes up with the expectations of the cultural communication between Korea and China.
Luo Huixi and Bing Xin use enhanced vision to bring the women in the feudal society into their works vividly, which can arouse the sympathy and longing of readers, appeal to the emancipation and independence of women through such vivid description. Although there are some flaws on the themes, it still had great values from the whole development in the history of literature.
The article has a specific research and analysis about Luo Huixi and Bing Xin’s women novels, looks forward to making a progress in the research of women literature of Korea and China in the 1810s to 1830s, hopes that it can extend to the comparative literature, has a whole, definite analysis and research about the women writers of generation in Korea and China, expects to make some contributions to the comparative research of the two countries women literature and the whole research of the culture of Korea and China.
