<AbsText> TROUT, though well known in Japan, are generally thought not to exist in China. Most naturalists will assert that they do not, and, as a matter of fact, I believe none have ever reached Europe for identification. Père Arnaud David, the well-known missionary and explorer, during his many long journeys in this country, never met with any, and distinctly states that they are not to be found. In 1877, however, Dr O. F. von Mollendorff, in an article contributed to the Journal of the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, mentions a specimen caught in a mountain stream north of Pekin, and brought to him for identification, and two years later in the North China Review records others found in the same province up to 16in. in length. </AbsText>
