Minnesingers who composed Minnesang in Germany are wandering minstrels in the Middle Age. They were influenced by troubadours and trouvere in twelfth to fourteenth centuries in France and Provence. Of course, even though their origin was influenced by troubadours and trouvere, music of minnesinger had developed with unique German characteristics. The contents of minnesinger music can be divided into Lied, Spruch and Leich according to contents. Lied is a man’s solo in monologue expressing emotions of happiness and sadness. Spruch has moral and satirical characters paying attention to society, politics and cultures. Meanwhile, Leich dealt with religious and secular themes.
Minnesang was composed of songs for noble women in the first, but it became songs for all women beyond a fixed frame.
This study examined the origin, musical characteristics of minnesingers, wandering minstrels in the medieval Germany and the formation and types of Minnesang. The study also figured out the transformation of Minnesang.
