It is a global trend that the aged population is increasing because the life expectancy is extended due to the advancement of medicine and improvement of living standard. The aged population aged 65 or older in Korea account for 14.2% of the total population. It is a stage to move beyond the aged society to the super-aged society. At the same time, the number of dementia patients over 65 is 720,000, accounting for 10.3% of the aged population. Along with the increase in the aged population, the number of dementia patients is also expected to increase. It is known that dementia can not be completely prevented or cured, but intervention of nursing intervention can delay the occurrence or progression. Therefore, it is necessary to develop various programs to prevent cognitive impairment in the aged who have not yet been affected by dementia.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of remembrance therapy using image of conventional foods on the cognition for the aged women. The subjects of this study were 50 aged women (26 control groups, 24 experimental groups) who had not been diagnosed with dementia in two ‘center for the aged’ with similar income levels in B city. Data collection was conducted from September 1, 2018 to November 17, 2018. K-MMSE was used for the selection of the study subjects and the research tool used HDS-K, a cognition measurement tool. The images used in the remembrance therapy consisted of 11 conventional foods(Kimchi, Meju, Oggukbap, Red bean jam, rice cake soup, Songpyeon, Sikhye, sujeong-gwa, Samgyetang, gomguk) that are frequently encountered in everyday life. The experimental procedure was introduced - preparation - progress - finishing.
As for data analysis, For homogeneity test of general characteristics was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. and homogeneity test of dependent variable was analyzed by x2, Fisher's exact test, and independent t-test. Differences in dependent variables between the two groups were analyzed by independent t-test.
As a result of this study, it was supported that ‘cognition of experimental group applying remembrance therapy using image of conventional foods would be higher than cognition of non applied control group(t=-4.96, p<.001)’.
The results suggest that remembrance therapy using image of conventional foods is an effective nursing intervention to improve the cognition for the aged women. In addition to we propose to use it effectively in the clinical nursing area, dementia prevention education and community nursing practice.
