캠벨 신화이론 접목을 통한 경극의 재조명 = Review Beijing opera by Applying Joseph Campbell’s Myth Theory

This study is to analyze the elements of popularity in Beijing opera by adopting Campbell 's myth theory, which is considered to be the best box - office theory in Hollywood today. An analysis of the reason why the Beijing Opera that succeeded in popularity compared to Pansori or Kabuki has not succeeded in the box office as in the past as today is the biggest problem in modern Bejing opera research. This paper make analysis of the factors which made the past performance of the Beijing Opera succeed and the present performance slump by comparing the performance factors of the Campbell theory and the characters of the Beijing Opera, and presents examination of alternative plans.
The characteristics of Beijing Opera are said to be typicality, fictionality, comprehensiveness. On the other hand, in Campbell's theory, the entertainment elements are called mimicry, empathy and creativity. In Campbell's heroic circulation, mimicry shows in the mission stage, empathy appears in abyss step and creation advents in the return stage. If the characteristics of Beijing Opera are analyzed by Campbell's entertainment elements. typicality is connected to mimicry, fictionality to empathy, and comprehensiveness to creativity. The typicality of the Beijing Opera provides the entertainment element of mimicry at the mission stage of the hero circulation. The fictionality of the Beijing Opera furnishes the entertainment element of empathy at the abyss stage of the hero circulation. The comprehensiveness of the Beijing Opera serves the entertainment element of creativity at the return stage of the hero circulation. The sucess of the past Beijing Opera popularity is well matched to the box official formula with Campbell's theory.
In today 's Beijing opera, the performance elements of the past Beijing opera have faded a lot. Today's form of everyday life is different from the past, so the traditional drama form of the Beijing Opera provide entertainment elements such as mimicry, empathy and creativity just like the past. If the elements of the new Beijing Opera form are analyzed and integrated by the Campbell theory, reviving the performance of the Beijing opera could be possible.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 오늘날 할리우드에서 최고의 흥행이론으로 간주되는 캠벨의 신화이론과 경극을 접목시키는 글이다. 판소리, 가부끼에 비해 흥행에 성공했던 경극이 오늘날 과거와 같이 흥행에 성공하지 못하는가에 대한 분석은 현대 경극연구에 있어 최대 과제가 되고 있다. 이 글은 캠벨 이론의 흥행요인과 경극의 특성을 비교하여 과거 경극의 흥행성공과 오늘날 경국 흥행의 부진요인을 분석, 대안을 모색해보고자 한다. 경극의 특징은 전형성, 허구성, 종합성이라 한다. 반면 캠벨 이론에 있어 흥행요소는 모방성, 공감성, 창조성이라고 한다. 캠벨의 영웅순환에서 소명단계는 모방에, 심연단계는 공감에, 귀환단계는 창조에 흥행요소가 있다. 경극의 특징을 캠벨의 흥행요소로 본다면 전형성은 모방성에, 허구성은 공감성에, 종합성은 창조성에 연결된다. 경극의 전형성은 영웅 순환의 소명단계에서 모방이라는 흥행요소를 제공한다. 경극의 허구성은 영웅 순환의 심연단계에서 공감이라는 흥행요소를 제공한다. 경극의 종합성은 영웅 순환의 귀환단계에서 창조성이라는 흥행요소를 제공한다. 과거 경극의 흥행은 캠벨이론이 가진 흥행공식에 매우 부합된다. 오늘날 경극에서는 과거 경극의 흥행요소가 많이 퇴색되었다. 일상의 형태가 과거와 달라진 오늘날 전통극 양식의 경극만으로는 과거와 같이 모방, 공감, 창조성이라는 흥행요소를 구비할 수 없다. 반면 모범극, 셰익스피어극, 3D 영화경극과 같은 경극의 다양한 변화 양식들은 각각 모방, 공감, 창조성이라는 흥행요소를 보완해 왔다. 새로운 경극 양식들이 가진 흥행요소를 캠벨 이론으로 분석하고 종합한다면 경극 흥행의 부활을 도모해 볼 수 있다.
