The objective of this research is to grasp the of environmental education from the tourists' point of views. this study was processed as follow.
Firstly, a research hypothesis was developed from an investigation on the study of environmental education and attitude.
Secondly, a verification of the study to assess and measure the environmental education, attitude and social responsibility was conducted.
Thirdly, the results were discussed theoretically and practical.
The research study was conducted among tourists who visited Gyeong-ju city from August 12-August 31, 2006. the valid sample size was 171 people.
It was executed using the following for its statistical treatment: frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis using SPSS WIN 14.0 program, and structural equation using AMOS 4.0.
The results of the study revealed the following.
First, the assumption that the tourists' attitude on the environment may improve according to added education experience was rejected. some of the information acquired thru environmental education was adapted.
Second, there was a perceived high level of social sense of responsibility due to improved tourists' attitude on the environment.
Third, the perception that environment education has positive effect on the social sense of responsibility was adapted.
Fourth, the hypothesized structural relationship among the measured variables related to tourists' environmental attitudes was rejected.
Results of the study, showed that simple and basic education did not significantly influence the tourists' environment behavior. on the other hand, it appeared that while education had a silent positive influence on the tourists' social sense of responsibility, this in turn largely influenced the tourists' environment behavior.
Findings of the study showed that the tourists' heightened level of knowledge on the environment help to improve the educational program activities in tourist resorts. it further supports the research that education is gained more from practical experience than from traditional or theoretical knowledge. Thus, applied nuts-and-bolts education program becomes applicable not only in our everyday life but in the tourism industry as well.
The limitations of this paper include the limited number of respondents as a sample size. However, the findings of this study will be used to measure future researches. the successful application of the optimal education program in the tourist resort industry will be achieved thru this study.
