ABSTRACT

A Study on the Systematic Stage Costume Design Process
— Focusing on the Musical「Dracula」—

In the spotlight of the 21st century, Performing-arts as part of the cultural-contents industry are in the stage of endless development. In particular, Theatrical musicals that appeal more to the vast public and are in vigorous communication with its audience have been in the regular interest in Korea, starting from the early 21st century. Popular large-scale imported hit musicals has raised the level of expectation of the general audience and more importantly, the producers and investors, so that the designer is judged by not only the quality of finished work but also the system in which the work has been produced, resulting in the need for high-quality products and a matching production system. This thesis will show how major concepts are derived from thorough analysis of a theatrical musical piece, leading to development of design and stages thereafter. This study will also focus its significance on the systematic costume design process and its development throughout the production process.
For this study, review of general concepts in theatrical musicals and basic theories in costumes is essential. In addition, several years of experience in the costume design and production field was utilized to finally establish research of the costume design process associated with「Dracula」the musical.「Dracula」was selected because it portrays basic human desires and essential human problems that coincide with the popularity of theatrical musicals through its acceptance by a world-wide audience, transcending it from any specific locality. To identify the design process, the first step is to research the Irish novelist Bram Stocker (1847～1912)'s novel with the same title, for which the musical「Dracula」is based upon. The historical background in which the novel was written and several different interpretations of Dracula needed to be reorganized. Furthermore, basic items such as the Costume Plot, Costume List and other basic articles based on each scene from「Dracula」were collected for this study. The main concept is identified through the analysis of the initial concept, initial image, and basic research. This main concept is the basis for each character analysis and specific design decisions are made at this stage. The relationship between each character is explained and color concepts of each scene are also identified to assist in understanding the stages involved in forming the final design.
Stage costume design is an independent field with areas of design and production, where each costume is specifically tailored to an actor playing a specific part in a specific performance. As performing arts develops, the importance of stage costumes is also becoming more significant and concurrently universities and other educational institutions are producing more and more professionals that study and train in the field of costume design. Due to the increasing number of professionals in these competitive times, an effective design presentation with the added self-public relations skills will surface as the deciding factors. Bold concept selection and confident design through systematic analysis will establish confidence in designers and this in turn will become a cornerstone for stage costume designers' overall significance.
I hope that this thesis will contribute to the manifest a systematic stage costume design process, and also wish that both handworks and computer graphics will be gradually cooperated to this field, so there will be many reasonable and effective ways because of taking merits from these two methods.

— 뮤지컬「드라큘라」를 중심으로 —

21세기에 각광받고 있는 문화콘텐츠 사업의 일환인 공연예술은 이미 무한 발전궤도에 들어선지 오래이며 특히 관객과 적극적으로 교류하고 대중 친화적인 매력을 가지고 있는 뮤지컬은 국내에서는 2000년대 초반 이후 본격적으로 주목받고 있다. 해외 유명 뮤지컬들의 대량 유입으로 대중의 눈높이는 물론 제작사와 투자사들의 눈높이까지 단번에 높아진 현 시점에서 결과물의 완성도 못지않은 작업과정의 체계성 또한 디자이너에 대한 주요 평가 요소이기 때문에 뮤지컬 의상 디자이너에게는 최종 디자인되어진 결과물의 완성도뿐만 아니라 디자인 및 작업 과정에서의 체계성 또한 절실히 요구되어진다. 이에 본 논문에서는 철저한 작품분석을 기반으로 한 주요 컨셉의 도출과 그에 따른 단계적인 디자인의 전개과정을 실현하고자 한다.
본 연구를 위해 뮤지컬의 개념 및 뮤지컬 의상의 특징 등에 관한 기본적인 이론적 고찰이 선행되었고, 다수의 뮤지컬에서의 실무경험을 기반으로 한 디자인과 제작 및 공연진행 등 전반적인 뮤지컬 의상의 작업과정에 관한 경험적 연구가 첨가되었으며, 마지막으로 뮤지컬 작품「드라큘라」를 소재로 한 무대의상 디자인 과정의 실증적 연구가 실행되어졌다. 장르를 대중적인 ‘뮤지컬’로 설정하였기 때문에 이에 어울리는 작품으로 인간의 본질적인 문제와 기본적인 욕망들을 소재로 하여 특정지역을 초월하여 전 세계적으로 공감을 얻고 있는「드라큘라」를 선정하였다.
디자인 과정을 위하여서는 일차적으로 뮤지컬「드라큘라」가 그 바탕을 두고 있는 아일랜드의 소설가 브램 스토커(Bram Stocker: 1847～1912)의 동명소설「드라큘라」에 대한 문헌연구가 이루어졌으며 그에 따라 소설이 쓰여진 당시의 시대상과 드라큘라에 대한 여러 가지 해석들을 정리해보았다. 더불어 뮤지컬「드라큘라」의 대본을 바탕으로 각 장면 구성 및 의상 계획과 의상 목록 등 의상디자인의 토대가 되는 기본적인 사항들의 정리가 이어졌다. 컨셉의 정립을 위한 발상의 발단 및 초기이미지 그리고 기본적인 리서치 등의 전개를 바탕으로 작품의 주제 및 주요 컨셉을 확정지었고 그 컨셉에 따라 각 인물의 분석이 완료되고 세부디자인 사항들이 결정되었다. 각 인물들 간의 관계에 대한 설명, 각 장 별 컬러 컨셉 및 스케치 과정 등이 첨가되어 최종 디자인이 나오기까지의 과정에 대한 이해를 도왔다.
무대의상은 특정한 공연의 배우들만을 위하여 디자인 및 제작이 이루어지는 특징을 가진, 독립된 전문 분야이다. 공연예술이 발달함에 따라 무대의상의 중요성도 부각되고 있고 이에 따라 해마다 각국의 대학 및 기타 교육기관에서 무대의상을 전공한 전문 인력들의 배출 또한 점차 늘어나고 있는 실정이다. 수요가 증가하고 있는 전문 인력들 탓에 디자이너들 간의 경쟁이 치열해지고 있는 무대의상의 세계에서는 효과적인 디자인 PT (presentation)와 자기 P.R.이 강력한 무기로 작용할 것이다. 확고한 컨셉 정립 및 체계적 분석 과정에 의한 자신감 있는 디자인 제시는 디자이너에 대한 신뢰를 높여주게 되어 궁극적으로는 무대의상 디자이너들의 위상을 높여주는 중요한 밑거름이 되어줄 것이기 때문이다.
본 연구자의 논문이 체계적인 무대의상디자인 과정의 시현에 기여할 수 있게 되기를 바라며, 무대의상디자인 분야의 작업에도 점차적으로 수작업과 CG 프로그램의 사용이 적절히 병행되어 각각의 장점만을 살린 합리적이고 효율적인 작업이 이루어지기를 바란다.
