The purpose of this study is to develop and execute a Sexual Consciousness promotion program using mass media with the target of specialty high school boys and verifying how it affects sex awareness. The problems established to accomplish the purpose are as follows. It is to clarify the following. First, what should be the contents of Sexual Consciousness promotion program using mass media? Second, how does a Sexual Consciousness promotion program using mass media affect specialty high school boys?
Based on the research questions, we hypothesized “The experimental group to whom the mass media based sexual consciousness promotion program is applied will show a significant change in their sexual consciousness compared to the control group.”
For subject of study, 2 of the same major junior classes in specialty high schools located in Chungcheongnamdo town were selected, each forming the experimental group and control group.
To verify the hypotheses, the experimental group took part in the mass media based sexual consciousness promotion program and carried out post-test twice(Monday and Friday) a week from September 8st to October 11rd during discretionary activities, and the control group carried out post-test without any program. For the test tool, 'Sex Psychology Test for High School' created by Park Young-Suk and Chun Young-min (2002) was used.
The Sexual Consciousness promotion program is based on the systematic counsel program development model of Park In-Woo(1995) which is frequently used in the development process of recent adolescent counsel programs, and We surveyed the subject students’ needs of the educational contents of the program and composed the contents of learning, and then made a survey on the validity of mass media for utilizing the contents through the material development team of the Association of Chungnam Health Teachers to which the present researcher belongs. by referring to High-school students' sexual self-determination program applying actual therapy(Kang Dul-sun, 2005), Reality of school sex education (Lee Jung-Ok, 2002), and a Healthy sex happy life (Park Hyo-Jung and 3 others, 2007).
and Statistical result data was analyzed using Mixed ANOVA with SPSS 12 for Windows, and in order to make up for the limitations on reliability of quantitative results, periodic experience reports of the groups and observations by counselors were analyzed and presented.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the experimental group who participated in the mass media based sexual consciousness promotion program showed a significant difference in sexual consciousness from the control group. In analysis by the sub area of sexual consciousness, the experimental group’s ‘sexual knowledge’ and ‘sexual impulse’ were significantly different from those of the control group, but ‘sexual attitude’ was not significantly different between the two groups. Possible reasons that no significant difference was observed in ‘sexual attitude’ were that the researcher suggested healthy and conservative sexual behaviors in consideration that the subjects were high school students but today’s adolescents perceive sexual behavior to be a part of a natural and normal relation and that the present program provided education on sexual attitude only through five sessions while a systematic long term approach is necessary for changing the students’ attitude. However, significant difference was observed in ‘sexual knowledge’ and ‘sexual impulse’ probably because the contents of the program met the subjects’ level of educational needs such as dating, pregnancy and contraception, sexual impulse, and sexual behavior that are necessary in the experiences of daily life, and because the subjects’ participation was motivated by various teaching methods including the use of mass media, discussions, self exposure, and OX puzzles rather than simple lectures.
In addition, we analyzed the contents of the counseling diary in each session and the group members’ reports on their experience in sub areas to supplement quantitative analysis. In the results as well, the program was found to have a positive effect on enhancing the students’ sexual consciousness.
The proposals for further study are as follows. First, as the present study was conducted with male students at a vocational high school at a town in Chungcheongnamdo, its results have a limitation in being generalized. Thus, subsequent research needs to make comparative analysis according to school type including academic high school students. Second, among the sub areas of sexual consciousness, change in sexual attitude appeared to be statistically insignificant. Accordingly, systematic in depth research is necessary to change students’ sexual attitude. Third, arrangement of environment to carry out small educations for open sexual experience and smooth progress is required, and study that applies the program with the target of small groups is necessary.
