신생민주주의 국가의 시민사회: 비교민주화론의 주요쟁점에 관한 이론적 고찰 = Civil Society in New Democracies: Theoretical Reflections on Major Issues in Comparative Democratization

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 1970년대 중반 이후 민주주의의 세계적 확산과 더불어 발전해 온 비교민주화론(comparative democratization)의 주요 쟁점들을 이론적으로 고찰하고 있다. 우선 구민주화론과 신민주화론으로 구성된 비교민주화론을 비교민주주의론과 비교하여 그 차이점을 논한다. 그리고 비교민주화론의 쟁점을 이론의 일반화가능성, 이행기과 공고화기의 관계설정 문제, 구민주화론과 신민주화론의 결합가능성 등으로 정리한다. 또한 비교민주화론의 핵심주제를 신생민주주의국가에서 시민사회와 국가간 쟁론정치(contentious politics)의 전개양식과 그것이 민주주의의 질에 미치는 영향으로 파악하고 동아시아-동유럽 신생민주주의 국제비교연구인 '시민사회의 논리'를 사례로 비교민주화론의 현재적·미래적 연구의제들을 검토한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper provides theoretical reflections on major issues in comparative democratization. It identifies different schools in the study of democratization and distinguishes comparative democratization from comparative democracy. The paper then considers three major theoretical issues in comparative democratization and suggests new themes by highlighting an international comparative project on the relationship between civil society and the quality of democracy in new democracies in East Asia and Eastern Europe.
