This study is a comparative analysis of changes in the name of Jeju Island's volcanic cones called as Oreum in Korean (hereafter called Oreum) on the map. maps and documents which contain the name of Oreum are analyzed. The national maps, the 'Chosun Topographical Map,' '1970s Topographical Map' and 'Modern Topographical Map' were analyzed while the map from the Jeju provincial government, the 'Jeju Oreum Map' was analyzed. Regarding the portal site map, ‘the National Geography Information Platform,’ and Naver and Daum were analyzed. The analysis documents include 'Oreum Traveler 1, 2, 3' (Kim Jong Cheol, 1995), 'Oreum's real identity and understanding' (Gang Soo Heon, 1996), 'Oreum Guidance' (Kim Seung Tae, Han Dong Ho, 2005), and 'Origins of the Korean region name'(National Geographic Information Institute (2010a)). The research method was based on data contained in 'Jeju Oreum'(Jeju island, 1997). Records of Oreum and ratio of the use of Oreum increase in orders of 'Chosun Topographical Map,' '1970s Topographical Map,' 'Modern Topogra phical Map' and 'Jeju Oreum Map.' When it comes to suffix of Oreum, ‘- Ahk(岳)’ is used the most and others is the least in the 'Chosun Topographical Map. ' Suffix ‘-Oreum’ is the most often recorded while ‘-San(山)’ is the least used in orders of '1970s Topographical Map,' 'Modern Topographical Map' and 'Jeju Oreum Map.' As for the type of Oreum records, 'Chosun Topographical Map' has 142 usages of Korean-Chinese characters. '1970s Topographical Map' presents Oreum as Korean in 127 spots while Chinese characters are written in 90 spots. 'Modern Topographical Map,' Korean -Chinese Characters both are used for 48 times and Korean only are found in 270 spots. 'Jeju Oreum Map' puts Oreum in Korean only in every use of 368 times. The number of different names was the highest when it comes to Oreum in Kujwa eup in 'Chosun Topographical Map' and '1970s Topographical Map. ‘Different names of Oreum is most found in eastern part of Jeju city in 'Modern Topographical Map.' In 'Jeju Oreum Map,' Oreum is written differently most often in eastern part of Jeju city and Aewol eup. In terms of the type of different names, 'Chosun Topographical Map' indicates many differences in usages of both prefix and suffix while '1970s Map,' 'Modern Topographical Map' and 'Jeju Oreum Map' records more different uses of prefix. In the sector of the portal site maps, the number of Oreum records, usage of different names, the type of the different names are analyzed in the national portal map site, ‘the National Geography Information Platform,’ and the private portal site including Naver and Daum. in the comparison between Naver and Daum map, notation of Oreum and the type of different names in both sites are analyzed and marked on the map to identify two sites’ differences. The suffix – Oreum is the most frequent in three map sites, others place the second in orders of usage of – Bong, -Ahk, and –San. The different names are written similarly in the National Geography Information Platform and Naver, and the standard names are closely put in Daum map site. When classifying names by type, Daum map has fewer names compared to the standard names, and there were many differences in Naver map site.
when tourists search for names of Oreum on the internet, showing that there are more unnamed Oreums and different namings of Oreum in Naver site than Daum site. The portal site map that provides information on Oreum is required to accurately recognize the difference in the notation of Oreum. The portal site serving with many unmarked Oreum will need to allow more Oreum designation service for the convenience of tourists.
