단편소설의 외연과 전략적 수사 -구병모 단편소설 연구- = The Extension and Strategic Rhetoric of Short Stories -Focused on the Study of Gu, Byeong-mo’s Short Stories-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is designed to study the method of expanding the narrative of Gu, Byeong-mo’s short stories and the rhetoric as its strategic methodology. The extension of denotation in literature is made in two directions. One is enlarging the width and depth of the genre itself and the other is breaking new ground. However, both methods are based upon the premise that the two matters, literary aesthetics reflecting the author’s world view and rhetoric expecting a new language structure, should be realized. Gu fictitiously has extended the borders of the reality and unreality, vocabulary and background and issues he deals with, realizing the reaction of ordinary people whose daily life is full of disasters and whose refuge was even blocked up in the stratified world using the strategic rhetoric, fantasy stories and fairy tales. Gu’s methodology is noticed in that it expands the background of his novels from one-dimensional space to multi-dimensional one and reveals new specific texture of the life accompanying the spatial element. And through this, he materializes unprecedented problematic characters and brings up a new stylistic discussion in the use of various, disparate language.
If there is a novelistic world exploding without bearing up the enormous pressure, Gu, Byeong-mo’s novelistic world can be the case of increased internal density under the enormous pressure. As a result, the gaps between reality and unreality, daily life and disaster, the leading role and the supporting role get narrower and the separation disappear in the end. Gu suggests a new methodology expanding the scope of short stories in that he composes his short stories as a series of coherent novels, consistently keeping and developing the awareness of a problem and strategic rhetoric methods. In particular, it has important implications that this method of composition does not merely remain as an experiment but also attracts readers’ voluntary participation by creating questions of their own, restores oral tradition of folk tales through the prolix style and relates his reading method to writing method at the same time and brings out active public response through this. Being trained by questions of the novelist who is facing the ambiguity of life and language would be the only novelistic method of seeking a solution in daily life of whole disasters, leading us to the freedom of interpretation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 구병모의 단편소설이 서사의 외연을 확장하는 방식과 그 전략적인 방법론으로서의 수사를 살피는 목적으로 설계되었다. 문학의 외연 확장은 두 가지 방향으로 이루어진다. 하나는 장르자체가 가진 폭과 깊이를 풍부하게 것과 또 하나는 새로운 영역을 개척하는 것이다. 하지만 두 가지 방법 모두 작가의 세계 인식을 반영한 문학적 미감과 새로운 언어구조를 기대할 수 있는 수사라는 두 가지 차원의 구현을 전제한다. 구병모는 재난이 일상이면서 동시에 계급화된 세상 속에서 피난마저도 봉쇄당한 평범한 사람들의 반응을 환상과 동화라는 전략적 수사로 구현하면서 현실과 비현실, 어휘와 배경, 다루는 문제의 경계를 소설적으로 확장해왔다. 구병모의 방법론은 소설의 배경을 일차적인 공간에서 다차원으로 확장하고, 그 공간요소에 부수되는 삶의 구체적인 새로운 결을 드러낸다는 점에서 주목된다. 그리고 이를 통해 전에 없던 유형의 문제적 인물들을 형상화하고, 다양한 이질적 언어를 통해 새로운 문체담론을 제기한다.
엄청난 압력을 견디지 못하고 폭발하는 소설적 세계가 있다면 구병모의 소설적 세계는 엄청난 압력으로 내부 밀도가 높아지는 경우라고 할 수 있다. 이 결과로 현실과 비현실, 일상과 재난, 주연과 조연의 거리가 좁아지고 결국 구분은 사라진다. 구병모는 이러한 문제의식과 전략적 수사 방법을 지속적으로 유지 발전시키면서, 자신의 단편소설을 하나의 맥락을 가진 연작소설 계열로 구성한다는 점에서 단편소설의 외연을 확장하는 새로운 방법론을 제시한다. 특히 이러한 작법이 실험으로 그치지 않고, 독자 스스로 질문을 만들 수 있도록 유도한다는 점, 만연체를 통해 민담의 구술적 전통을 복원하는 동시에 자신의 독법을 작법으로 연결한다는 점, 그리고 이를 통해 대중의 적극적 반응을 이끌어 냈다는 점은 중요한 시사점을 준다. 언어와 삶의 모호함 앞에 직면한 소설가의 질문언어에 단련되는 것은, 우리를 해석의 자유로 이끌면서, 총체적 재난의 일상에서 해결방안을 찾는 유일한 소설적 방법이 될 것이다.
