This paper studied the use and characteristics of blues guitar in Korean popular music. It cannot be denied that most guitarists, regardless of the world, were greatly influenced by the genre of blues. Therefore, research on the influence of blues guitar in popular music must be conducted. In order to ensure the accuracy of the sample, the music chart used in this study used the Gaon chart. As for the study subjects, from 2010 to June 2021 (first half of the year), the characteristics of blues guitar were searched and analyzed for the top 10 popular songs. As a result of the analysis, first, the use of pentatonic was the highest. The case where harmonious characteristics appeared and the case where blue notes were used was the same number of times. Second, when a song and blue note showing harmonious characteristics were used, pentatonic was always used. However, the use of slide-bars was used regardless of the use of pentatonic. Third, it was shown that the ratio of use in dance songs was low in terms of genre, and only three out of a total of 43 songs were dance songs. Based on the results of this survey alone, it can be seen that the frequency of use of dance songs is very low. Fourth, when excluding the solo part, there was no case of using more than two bars. It indicated that there are restrictions on expression within the scope of K-pop in genre. Fifth, when all the years were combined, the ratio was 50.6%. 2019 showed the highest percentage (87.5%), followed by 75% in 2021 and 71.4% in 2018. Of the total 12-year survey period, the proportion was more than 50% from 7 to 50%. The above research results are an analysis of the use and characteristics of blues guitars in popular music. Through this study, it was confirmed that the blues-like approach is widely used in popular music. We hope that this paper will be helpful to guitar performers and further students studying popular music.
