Royal Flying Corps 유니폼 디자인의 특성을 활용한 의상 작품 연구

The Royal Flying Corps uniform is the standardized military uniform worn by members of the Royal Flying Corps during World War period. Because of their practical and functional purpose, lots of commonwealth air forces' uniforms are also designed by based on the Royal Air Force pattern. Later on, these revolutionary RFC uniforms are influenced on various of contemporary design development.
From the previous discussion, RFC uniforms are usually well blended into the commercial design because it has multiple design purposes such as it shows practical function and also significant accessory design as well.
In this research, first, I made a significant time frame such as World War period will be the important part of my research. Furthermore, in my research, I would like to discuss on different characteristic designs techniques related to the historical documents, photographs, article and classifies archive data from history of military uniform.
RFC uniforms has a basic set to wear such as it has basic double jackets and pants. In occasionally, people can overlap their basic form of suit with other types of layers. Overall shape of the uniform shows that linear shapes of clothing and also it contains active silhouette.
The Ike jacket is the most basic form of military uniform. The jacket classified into three different types of category such as great coat, flying coat and trench coat. The jacket silhouette appears as long coat. Also, it contains major type of decorative function such as the jacket has metal buttons, flap pockets with inverted pleats, epaulet, and belts. In additionally, the leather belt and emblem accessories represents artistic and aesthetical part of cloth design.
The aspects of the war changed, the main color of the uniforms also changed to khaki color. The color of Khaki uses as camouflage color during the battle. Furthermore, the navy as the support color for the uniform. The gold has been used as the highlight color for the metal button and red, blue and white for using RFC traditional mark as well.
Not only the form and color pallette, the RFC uniform brought excellent materials for clothes. For example, they used a gabardine which is good for water proof purpose and leather goods that provides excellent protection against the wind. Also, they used a wool for the warmth and temperature for human. At last, they used a cotton for the permeability.
Through my theoretical research, I would like to re-created and re-produced women's clothes combined with RFC uniform design. During my research, I created eight different women's clothes and three belts. The design works are focused on practical and functional concepts from RFC uniforms.
First, the RFC uniform has the orthopedic symbolic properties as the uniform design. The history confirmed that the classic style of uniform can be used as timelessness design for fashion industry. In addition, the classical figure of military uniforms suitable for contemporary fashion style as well.
Second, because of the functional reasons, I transform the masculine aspect of the design turning into the female design pattern. Especially, I converted the major design sources from the RFC uniform such as flap pocket, double breasted buttons, and epaulet. According to my research, it shows that the RFC uniform can transform into the modern design and also it represents practical women's clothes.
Third, it shows that the detail elements of the RFC uniform can provide the casual motif for women's fashion. For example, using the different shapes and composition of the flap pockets, may give the various of design aspect for the women's fashion design.
Fourth, my design work shows that the RFC uniform's motif can give the multi-functional and satisfaction for the consumer. Because RFC uniform's elements can satisfy the decoration part of clothes and also it gives enhance diversity of design. Moreover, the cross coordination for the design products can able to improved the high value as a commodity and fashion market.
Fifth, the RFC uniform design allows us the high technological yet innovation military look for contemporary fashion culture. It maintains the elegance and also practically function from the new fashion materials.
As a result, RFC uniform gives us new fashion style and ideas for the designer. For example, the fashion design can be classical yet practical and also it can sensitive for people's life style as well. Through my study, I wish that the RFC uniform design explores the future of contemporary fashion initiative, brings together a multitude of fashion platforms and innovative perspectives from the cultural heritage industry.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

Royal Flying Corps(RFC) 유니폼은 세계대전 기간에 형성되어 활동한 영국의 왕립비행 군단이 착용한 군복이다. 과거의 권위적인 군복과는 달리 실용성과 기능성이 고려되어 고안된 최초의 공군 복으로 군복의 발달사에 혁명적인 계기가 되었다.
이러한 RFC 유니폼은 군복에 기능성이 요구되었던 제 1·2차 세계대전 시기의 유니폼으로 이전 시기의 장식적 이미지도 다소 남아있어 기능성과 장식성을 동시에 충족시킬 수 있기에 스타일과 활동성을 요구하는 현대인에게 디자인의 모티브로 사용되고 있다.
본 연구를 위해 먼저 현대 군복의 근간이 된 시점이었던 세계대전 기간을 시대적 범위로 정하였다. 그리고 각종 문헌 자료와 사진 자료를 토대로 고찰하고 사진 자료를 분류, 분석하여 군복을 형성하고 있는 조형을 기준으로 디자인적 특성을 분석하였다.
RFC 유니폼은 재킷과 팬츠를 기본 복장으로 구정되며, 상황에 맞도록 외의를 덧입는 형식으로 되어있다. 전체적 형태는 직선적이고 기능적이며 활동적인 실루엣으로 나타났다.
기본 제복이 되는 아이크 재킷은 형태에 따라 두 가지로 분류 되었으며 외의로는 그레이트 코트와 플라잉 재킷, 트렌치 코트가 있었다. 실루엣은 롱코트의 직선적인 형상을 보였고 금속제 단추와 주름 잡힌 플랩 포켓, 견장, 벨트 등이 주요 디테일로 사용되어 기능적이며 장식적인 역할을 하였다.
의복에 사용된 디테일의 요소 외의 가죽 제 벨트나 각반, 엠블럼 등의 액세서리가 더하여져 조형적 미와 기능성을 더해주었다.
유니폼에 사용된 색채는 전쟁의 양상이 변화되어 감에 따라 위장복의 개념이 가미되었고, 따라서 카키색이 주조색으로 사용되었다. 여기에 예복에 사용된 네이비 색채가 보조색으로 사용되었으며, 금속제 단추에 사용된 골드 컬러와 마크에 사용된 레드, 블루, 화이트 컬라가 강조색으로 사용되었다.
형태와 색채 뿐만 아니라 소재에서도 기능성이 고려되어 보온성과 방수정이 뛰어난 소재를 사용하였다. 즉, 바람막이에 좋은 가죽이나 개버딘, 단열성이 좋은 모직, 투습성이 높은 면 소재 등이 사용되었다.
RFC유니폼의 형태와 기능적 디테일 등에 대한 이론적 연구를 바탕으로 여성복을ㄹ 디자인하였다. 현대적인 여성성을 강조하기 위해 신소재와 모던한 색채를 도입하여 의상 8점과 벨트 3점을 등 총 11점을 디자인하고 제작하였다. 작품 제작을 통해 군복을 실용복식으로 재창조하여 앞으로의 패션에 그 활용의 기능성을 제시하는데 의의를 두고자 하였다. 이러한 연구 결과 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, RFC 유니폼은 군복으로서의 정형적이고 상징적인 특성을 지녔기 때문에 시대를 거듭하며 지속적으로 모티브로 활용될 수 있는 클래식 스타일이 되었음을 확인하였다. 또한, 군복으로써 기능성이 처음으로 도입된 기능적 군복의 효시로 현대 패션이 추구하는 활동성을 충족시킨다.
둘째, 가장 대표적인 디테일인 플랩 포켓과 이중 여밈, 에플렛 등의 기능성에 기인한 남성적 디테일을 여성적 실루엣에 적용시킴으로 활동적인 여성의 이미지를 표현할 수 있었다. 즉, RFC 유니폼이 갖은 디테일은 활동적인 여성을 표현하는 현대 의복으로 재해석하는데 적합하였다.
셋째, 플랩 포켓에 레이저 커트와 같은 새로운 기법을 접목시켜 디자인을 개발함으로 RFC 유니폼의 기능적 디테일이 장식적 요소로 변환시켜 사용하였다. 그 결과 새로운 기술을 도입할 때 고전적인 디테일도 디자인의 모티브가 되어 새로운 디자인 창출을 가능하게 할 수 있음을 알았다.
넷째, 기능성과 장식성을 동시에 만족시키는 디테일적 요소가 디자인의 다양성을 높일 수 있다. 하나의 디테일이 보호의 기능을 함과 동시에 중요한 장식적 기능으로써 사용되는 점에서 착안하여 다기능적 요소를 작품에 도입함으로 다양한 룩을 연출 가능하도록 하였다. 또한 크로스 코디네이션이 가능하도록 하여 상품적으로써의 고부가가치를 향상시켰다.
다섯째, RFC 유니폼의 고유의 전통적인 소재에서 벗어나 신소재를 사용하여도 RFC의 고전적인 품위와 실용성의 특징을 보존하면서 첨단의 이미지를 더하여 현대적인 트렌드를 반영한 새로운 이미지의 밀리터리 룩의 표현을 가능하게 하였다.
이와 같이 RFC 유니폼의 기능적, 장식적 조형 특징들은 현대 의상에 도입될 때, 고전적인 이미지를 내포하는 동시에 활동성이 강조된 동창적인 의상디자인이 가능하다는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이러한 고전적인 사례들이 디자인 모티브로 작용할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하는데 본 연구의 의의가 있다. 그러므로 RFC 유니폼이 갖고 있는 군복의 과학적인 기능성에 현대적인 감성과 실용성이 더해져 인간중심의 디자인으로 발전되기를 바란다.
