This study evalutes the performance of an BPSK optical receiver using the balanced PLL in the presence of shot noise originating from the photo diode and phase noise of the optical source. The impact of these noise is minimized if loop natural frequency and modulation phase deviation are chosen optimally. Then it is obtained that required laser linewidth to achive a BER of 10???. For example the optimum phase deviation is 60°and the required laser linewidth is 20 KHz when a photon number per bit is 20 and a minimum transmission bit rate is 3GHz.
