로런스 멜빌론의 현재성: 포스트모던 논의들과의 비교 연구 = The Present Significance of D. H. Lawrence`s View of Herman Melville: A Comparative Study with Post-modern Discourses

This paper purports to elucidate D. H. Lawrence’s view of American literature, by comparing his essay on Herman Melville with those of Gilles Deleuze and Donald Pease. Recent studies of Melville, home and abroad, have been deeply affected by post-modern, and post-structural theories. In his critical essays such as “On the Superiority of Anglo-American Literature” and “Bartleby; or, The Formula” Deleuze makes it felt that Lawrence’s Studies in Classic American Literature has been his main source of inspiration in rethinking American literature. In spite of his appreciation a close examination shows wide differences between them in that Deleuze disregards such essential concepts in Lawrence as ‘escaped slaves’ and ‘the spirit of place.’ It turns out that considering Ahab’s non-nomadic character, his thesis of Ahab’s becoming Moby-Dick does not make much critical sense. Donald Pease, discerning the significance of Lawrence’s discrimination of two kinds of freedom, has performed an important task of dismantling the hegemonic liberalism established during the Cold War period. His recent essay using the idea of ‘novel govenmentality’ provides us with a fresh look into one of multi-layered streams constituting significances of Moby-Dick. His position proves, however, to be much different from Lawrence’s when he recommends reading Moby-Dick from the perspective of Pip as a kind of antidote to all the interpretations focusing on Ahab’s revenge on the white whale.
