The discovery of Hantaan virus as the etiologic agent of Korean hemorrhagic fever(KHF) and the establishment of the serologic diagnostic method and growth of the virus in tissue culture cells led to electron microscopic and molecular biologic studies which revesled Hantaan virus as belonging to the family of Bunyaviridae. In 1982 WHO adapted to call KHF and other diseases with compatible clinical symptoms as Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). This report presents new epiderniologic findings of HFRS in Korea based on the evaluation of recent seroepidemiologic data of hospitalized HFRS patients in Korea. 1. In Korea several hundred HFRS cases occur annually with higher incidence among civilians than soldiers. 2. Seasonal incidence of HFRS shows that more than 80% of cases occur from October to December, about 10% from May to July and the rest 10% throughout the year. 3. HFRS cases occur throughout the nation especially in Provinces of Kyunggi, Seoul city, Choongchungdo and Kangwondo. 4. Among clinically examined 961 patients suspected of HFRS, 501 patients (approximately 50%) were serologically confirmed as HFRS of which 98% were in the adult age group. 5. New findings show that large number of HFRS patients occur in urban areas of Seoul city from October to December.
