기독교적 가치관에 기초한 정서조절과 기독교인성교육 = Emotion Regulation based on Christian Value System and Christian Character Education

In order to address the increasingly severe issues of school violence, adolescent misbehavior, and rising suicide rates, the Department of Education has distributed new policies with regards to character education within Korean school systems. Evaluations of preexisting character education programs within the United States and abroad suggest the importance of a wholistic approach between and through the home, school, and local community. Within this context, the Christian community may contribute an ideally accessible educational venue to students, parents, and teachers. Based on neurological research concerning the interaction of affect, cognition and behavior, this essay discusses the influence of affect on attention systems, information processing, meaning generation, and behavioral control systems. Emotion is closely linked to moral development, while emotion regulation is a prerequisite to the pursuit of core Christian educational virtues: that is, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Using the five emotional regulation strategies formulated by James Gross and Ross Thompson (situation selection, situation modification, attention development, cognitive change, and response modulation), this research explores their application to Christian character education, interweaving examples from the Biblical narrative. Furthermore, it examines the possibility of promoting emotional development via learning and practice, based on the concept of Brain Plasticity and potential supporting evidence in the form of experimental results concerning neural structural changes generated by spiritual practice by neuroscientists Newberg, Davidson, and Kabat-Zinn.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

학교폭력, 청소년 비행, 급증하는 자살률 등 날로 심각해지는 사회문제에 대처하기 위해 교육부는 인성교육 대책 마련이 시급하다고 강조하며인성교육 계획안을 발표하였다. 그러나 다양한 인성교육 프로그램의 효과를 검증해보면 성공적인 인성교육을 위해서는 학교-가정-지역사회의 협력을 통한 총체적 접근이 필수적이다. 이러한 측면에서 학생-교사-학부모 교육을 함께 수행할 수 있는 기독교 공동체는 총체적 인성교육에 크게 기여할 수 있다. 필자가 주장하는 기독교 인성교육은 하나님 형상의 회복을 목적으로 하며, 정서교육, 가치교육, 도덕교육을 포괄하는전인교육을 의미한다. 본 연구는 최근 뇌 과학이 규명한 정서와 인지/행동과의 상관관계, 특히 정서가 주의집중, 정보처리과정, 의미 만들기 및행동조절체계에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구를 기초로 정서의 기능과 기독교 인성교육에 있어 정서조절의 역할에 대해 논하고자 한다. 정서는 도덕성 발달과도 밀접히 연계되어 있으며, 정서 조절은 기독교 인성교육의핵심 덕목인 사랑, 희락, 화평, 오래 참음, 자비, 양선, 충성, 온유, 절제등을 함양하기 위해 필수적으로 요청되는 능력이다. 본 연구는 Gross와Thompson이 제안하는 정서 조절의 다섯 가지 방략―상황선택(Situation Selection), 상황수정(Situation Modification), 주의배분(Attention Deployment), 인지전환(Cognitive Change), 반응조정(Response Modulation)―이 기독교 인성교육에서 활용될 수 있는 방안을 성경의 가르침 및 사례와 연관 지어 고찰해 보겠다. 또한 정서조절능력 향상을 포함한 정서 발달이 학습과 훈련을 통하여 촉진될 수 있는가의 가능성을 ‘뇌의 유연성’(Brain Plasticity) 개념을 토대로 살펴보고, Newberg(2010), Davidson(1997; 2003; 2004)과 Kabat-Zinn (1990; 2003)의 실험을 통해 보고된 영적 수련을 통한 뇌 신경구조의변화를 실례로 소개하고자 한다.
