Grammaticalization of Discourse Markers from the Verb of Vision in Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A notable aspect of vision in language is that the lexemes denoting vision often develop into discourse markers (DMs). Such markers tend to carry the function of demanding the addressee’s attention to a particular aspect of the discourse or the topic being presented. This is a natural consequence considering the fact that interlocutors employ diverse strategies to engage the attention of the addressee and request the addressee’s visual attention. Thus cognitive engagement is a reasonable strategy for meaningful and effective discursive interaction. Another interesting aspect of the development of vision-based DMs is that the speaker may use these fundamentally interactional markers in (semi-)monologues to engage himself or herself. The function of these particular DMs is equivocal in that they take the interactional form but they carry a non-interactional function. This paper aims to explore the emergence of DMs from a vision-related Korean verb with special reference to their syntactic and functional characteristics from the grammaticalization perspective.
