In this article, I analyze the semantic usages of kekkou in contemporary Japanese in terms of adverbial use, taking into consideration the types of text, the communicative types of sentence, and the context where kekkou is utilized. The result indicates that the semantic usages and functions of kekkou are related to the types of text in which kekkou occurs.
In the adverbial use, no specific tendency is observed of the text types, but it has been revealed that kekkou functions as an adverb which exhibits the nature of degree and the nature of evaluation. In some contexts, kekkou takes on evaluative meanings such as “unexpectedly” and “surprisingly.”
So I pointed out that it should be focused on the communicative features rather than meanings in a dictionary, in case of teaching the adverbs in the Japanese.
