디지털 시대의 모사와 이미지 = Simulation and Image in the Digitalized World

국문 초록 (Abstract)

모사 기법의 발달로 이미지 세계가 획기적으로 변모하고 있다. 오랜 동안모사는 사물이나 현상을 본뜨려는 모방의 동의어로 간주되었고, 이러한 인식은 기계의 힘으로 모사물을 신속정확하게 복제하게 된 근대 산업사회까지이어졌다. 그러나 디지털 시대로 접어들면서 이미지는 새로운 단계로 이행중이다. 따라서 이 글에서는 (1) 아날로그적 모방이나 복제에서 디지털 시뮬레이션에 이르는 모사의 계보를 추적하고, (2) 그로부터 디지털 모사 특유의역능을 탐지하여, (3) 디지털 모사의 현황과 사회문화적 효과를 총괄적으로진단한 후, (4) 디지털 모사가 개인의 정신세계에 끼치는 영향을 집중적으로논구해, (5) 디지털 모사 시대의 이미지 전위 양상을 검토해 보고자 한다.
디지털 시대의 모사는 단순히 모조품을 재현하는 데 그치지 않고 현실보다더 현실적 효과를 발하는 가상적 생활공간을 제공하는 “부재적 현전”의 효능을 발휘함으로써 우리 삶에 풍요와 활기를 더해주고 있다. 이로 인해 우리정신세계의 심층에 소재한 욕구체계에서 근대 산업사회의 주도적 행위원리인 현실원리가 몽상적 꿈이 인도하는 환상원리로 대체되는 조짐이 역력하다.
그 결과, 이미지도 (1) 가시성을 상실한 보이지 않는 양식으로, (2) 소정의틀을 견지하지 못하는 무정형 상태로, (3) 실체성을 담보하지 못하는 허상으로, (4) 현존마저 식별할 수 없는 무상(無想)의 단계로 변전할 개연성이 있다.
시각성(visuality), 형상성(figuration), 실제성(reality) 및 현전성(presence) 이라는 이미지 본연의 속성들에 전면으로 역행하는 이러한 디지털 모사 시대의 이미지 전위는 “이것은 더 이상 이미지가 아니다”라는 자기부정적 예표가아닐 수 없다. 이러한 파국적 상황은 파상력을 보강한 ‘와해적 상상력’으로이미지를 재창조하려는 능동적 사유를 통해 초극될 수 있다고 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The world of image is transforming dramatically with the development of simulation technology. Simulation was considered a synonym for imitation of objects or phenomena for long, and this idea continued into the modern industrial period, where imitation could be quickly and accurately replicated by machine power. However, as we enter the digital age, images are moving to a new phase.
This paper seeks to (1) trace the genealogy of simulation from analog to digital stage. (2) detect its unique capabilities, (3) overview the general traits and sociocultural effects of digital imitation, (4) investigate the effect of digital simulation upon the deep mental sphere of an individual and (5) discuss the displacement of image in the digital era.
The imitation of the digital age is not just reproducing imitation, but transforming our lives into a state of excitement and vitality by exerting the effect of “absent presentation” that gives rise to a virtual world looking more realistic than our real world. Owing to the change, there are signs that the reality principle, the leading behavioral principle of the modern industrial society, will be replaced by the fantasy principle in the desire system deeply located in our spiritual world.
As a result, it is likely that the image will lead (1) to an invisible form losing visibility, (2) to an amorphous state not holding a uniform framework, (3) to an illusion that does not guarantee substance, and (4) to the state of nought where nothing can be identifiable whatsoever. such displacement of Image in the digital era, that eradicates the inherent attributes of the image of visuality, figuration, reality, and presence, may be a sign of image suicide, saying, “This is no longer an image.” This catastrophic situation can be recovered only by an audacious effort to recreate images with the power of “disruptive imagination,” the combination of the contradictory but complemental powers to deform and reform conventional images.
