진화심리학적 관점으로 해석한 장소애착에 관한 연구 = A Study on Evolutionary Psychology Approach of the Place Attachment

Human beings have a preference for places where they have experiences, encouraged by individual or collective memories of the areas. These memories imbued with personal meanings form placeness, creating a bond between humans and their living places. In addition, the homing instinct for those places provides them with emotional stability. For the modern people who have to adjust themselves to the rapidly changing urban environment triggered by the progress of technology and civilization, this sense of placeness allows them to develop place-based identity. In evolutionary psychology, nomadic spirituality indicates not a simple human nature to be fond of wandering around, but an intellectual ability that is automatically obtained in an attempt to efficiently secure food and avoid the supposed dangers. In the initial stage of the research, this study conducted a bucket list test that is designed to examine unconscious human nature and desire for attachment, and discovered participants’ strong sense of attachment to place. Based on theoretical considerations of the relevant concepts introduced in advanced research, this study conducted place preference experiment to measure the degree of the preference, and to further investigate the structure of the preference behind the observed phenomenon. This study adopted an evolutionary psychology approach to explain humans’ place preference and place attachment in accordance with the identified structure of the mind. The experiments presented in this study found out the factors affecting place attachment constituted of space-related experiences, proving that this type of attachment is one of the most important human instincts for survival. In light of these facts, this study is also expected to contribute to future research on preservation of placeness and renewal of spaces by taking into account diverse experiences modern people have, in the era where a number of meaningful places are gradually disappearing.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인간은 자신이 경험한 장소에 대해 호감을 가지게 되는데, 이는 그 장소에 대한 개인 혹은 집단의 기억을 바탕으로 이루어진다. 공간에서의 기억이 주는 의미가 부여된 장소성을 통해 인간과 생존 공간 사이에 유대감이 형성되고, 장소에 대한 귀소 감성으로서 정서적 안정감을 얻을 수 있다. 이는 기술의 진보와 문명의 발전으로 인해 급변하는 현대의 도시 환경에 적응해야 하는 인간에게 공간적 정체성을 제공하기 위함이다. 진화심리학은 노마드 감성이 단지 떠돌아다니는 것을 좋아하는 본성이 아니라, 먹을거리를 효율적으로 확보하고 이 과정에서 맞닥뜨리는 위험을 피하려는 자동화된 지능으로서의 감성이라고 설명한다. 본 연구는 무의식적 본성과 애착 욕구를 살펴볼 수 있는 버킷리스트 실험에서 장소에 대한 강렬한 호감을 발견한 것으로부터 출발하였다. 이후 선행 연구를 통해 관련 개념을 이론적으로 고찰하고, 장소 호감도 실험을 통해경험 장소에 대한 호감 정도를 측정하여 현상 이면에 숨겨진 본질로서의 호감 구조를 찾아내고자 하였다. 이 과정에서 발견된 마음의 구조를 바탕으로 경험한 장소에 대한 호감, 장소 애착을 진화심리학적 해석을 통해 연구해보고자 하였다. 실험을 통해 관찰된 현상을 바탕으로 공간 경험을 통해 형성된 장소에 대한 애착의 요인을 밝혀내었고, 이러한 애착이 인간이 살아가는 환경에서 매우 중요한 생존 본능이라는 것을 발견하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 의미 있는 장소들이 점차 사라져가는 현 시대에서 경험의 다양성을 반영하여 장소성을 유지하고 재생시킬 수 있는 공간들에 대한 연구를 진행할수 있을 것이다.
