그로테스크 미학 - 19세기 대중예술의 팬터마임과 파국의 피에로 = Grotesque Aesthetics: Pantomime in the Early 19th Century and Pierrot of Catastrophe

국문 초록 (Abstract)

19세기의 부활 이후 근대 그로테스크에 관한 주요 논의는 대문학과 시각예술을 대상으로 해왔다. 이러한 학문적 관습은 특정 시기(특히 19세기 초)를 중심으로 주목해야만 할 대중적 팬터마임과 그로테스크와의 관계성을 쉽게 간과하도록 하였다. 이것은 우리 시대에 들어 연구 범위의 확장 필요성을 환기하게 되었다. 본 논문은 19세기 초 혁명의 시대에 프랑스에서 부활한 전통의 팬터마임과 낭만적 피에로가 프랑스 문학계와 맺는 관계 및 근대 그로테스크 미학의 대전환에 미친 영향을 탐구한다. 팬터마임에 관한 연구의 대상은 파리 퓌낭뷜극장(Theatre des Funambules)과 그 무대의 별 가스파르 드뷔로(Gaspard Debureau, 1796-1846)이다. 그의 전통적 피에로에 대한 재해석과 혁신은 그로테스크 미학을 지지하는 낭만주의와 상징주의 대문호들을 사로잡았다. 이 새로운 형상의 드뷔로/피에로는 부동의 차가운 감성(sang-froid)과 공포-희극이 결합한 공포스런 희극광대이자, 기존의 질서를 해체하고 파국을 연출하는 충격의 피에로이다. 논문은 드뷔로에 의한 피에로의 변형과 이 기이한 드뷔로/피에로가 어떻게 문학가들을 자극하며 이들의 수사학을 통해 근대 민중의 표상이자 “민중의 의식”으로까지 부상하는지, 또 어떻게 19세기 그로테스크 미학의 전환에 중요한 기폭제가 되는지를 해명한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

While the development of modern grotesque aesthetics have been actively discussed, the discussion have been limited to its effects on literature and art. Unfortunately, this narrow focus has undermined the contribution of public pantomimes to grotesque aesthetics. Thus, this paper studies the Pierrot which was resurrected on the French pantomime stage in the early 19th century; in particular, the influence of this so called romantic Pierrot on the grand literature and theoretical grandeur is studied in depth. The specific subject of this study is the star of the Paris Theatre des Funambules, the legend of modern pantomime: Jean B. Gaspard Deburau(1796-1846). During his time, the Pierrot of Deburau, through the fascination of contemporary romantists and symbolists, rose as the “Pierrot of the people”, or the “conscience du people.” This paper discusses how Deburau achieved such a status by radical reinterpreting the traditional Pierrot into the romantic Pierrot, a cold-blooded mixture of horror and laughter. Also discussed is the process which the romantic Pierrot, with a deconstructive and catastrophic power, brought grotesque aesthetics into a new phase.
