『해동야언별집(海東野言別集)』현존본의 내용과 성격 = The Contents and Characteristics of the Existing Version of Haedongyaeonbyeoljip(海東野言別集)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 허균(許筠)의 야사류 저술 『해동야언별집(海東野言別集)』의 문헌 정리를 시도하여 그 내용을 살펴보고, 역사 기록물로서 『해동야언별집』의 성격을 고찰한 것이다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 현존하는 『해동야언별집』의 발초본(拔抄本) 2종을 검토하여 현존본의 선본을 상정하였고, 『해동야언별집』의 기사를 직접 인용하고 있는 여러 문헌들의 기사를 수합하여, 책의 내용 분석을 위한 토대를 마련하고자 하였다. 이어서 정리된 자료의 분석을 통해 이 책의 내용이 조선왕조실록(朝鮮王朝實錄)과 관련이 있다는 사실을 밝혀보았다.
『해동야언별집』이라는 문헌은 태조(太祖)부터 선조(宣祖)까지의 역사 사실을 기록한 책으로, 특히 전체 기사의 내용이 실록과 거의 같거나 유사한 특징이 파악되었다. 실제로 허균이 사초(史草)에 보았다는 기록이 있기 때문에, 허균이 실록 관련 자료에 접근했던 견문을 토대로 『해동야언별집』을 집필한 사실을 짐작해볼 수 있었다.
또한 이 책은 허균이 역사 사실 기록에다 사평(史評)과 부연 설명까지 덧붙인 특징도 확인된다. 실록과 내용만 유사한 것이 아니라 실록의 서술 방식까지 자신의 야사 집필 과정에 적용한 결과물임을 논해보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper reconstructs the extant version of Haedongyaeonbyeoljip, commonly attributed to Heo Gyun as an unofficial history, and explores its contents and characteristics as a historical record. To achieve this, the existing materials of Haedongyaeonbyeoljip were first organized, and based on this reconstructed version, the paper analyzes its articles. The findings reveal that the contents of this work are closely related to entries in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.
Haedongyaeonbyeoljip is an unofficial history encompassing factual records from the reigns of Taejo to Seonjo, supplemented by Heo Gyun's commentary and additional explanations. Notably, the content of its articles shows significant parallels to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. While it is difficult to ascertain precisely how Heo Gyun accessed the content of the Annals during the compilation of his work, evidence suggests that he consulted relevant materials, such as the original manuscript of the Annals, enabling him to produce an unofficial history that reflects much of its content. Furthermore, this paper argues that Haedongyaeonbyeoljip is a remarkable example of unofficial history, not only because of its similarities to the Annals, but also due to Heo Gyun’s integration of its narrative style alongside his own commentary.
The study focuses on the similarities between Haedongyaeonbyeoljip and the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, as revealed through a comparative document analysis, with an emphasis on basic analysis. Future research utilizing the contents of the extant Haedongyaeonbyeoljip could pave the way for more in-depth studies on unofficial histories, Heo Gyun’s historiographical methods, and his historical perspective, which have not been thoroughly explored to date.
