『烟經』과 『蔫錄』을 통해서 본 조선과 일본의 담배문화 = Exploring the Tobacco Culture of Joseon and Japan through 『Yeongyeong』and『Enroku』

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 각국의 정치·경제·사회·문화 전반의 양상이 반영된 기호품의 중요성에 주목하여, 조선과 일본에서 큰 인기를 끌었던 담배를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 동시대에 작성된 이옥의 연경과 오스키 겐타쿠가 저술한 언록을 대상으로 두 문헌의 체제와 구성, 내용을 비교하였다. 분석 결과, 저술목적에 따라 두책의 서술 방식이 상이함을 확인하였다. 연경은 이옥의 개인적 체험을 바탕으로 문학적 표현이 가미되어 작가의 주관적 의식이 드러났지만, 언록은 객관적관점에서 정보를 전달하는 데 중점을 두어 전달자의 임무를 수행하였다. 양국의담배문화는 대체로 유사한 양상을 보이었다. 담배의 의약적 효능에 대한 논의에서도 신체적 치료법보다는 심리적 및 정서적 효과에 초점을 맞추는 경향이 있었다. 또한, 담배의 품질은 재배 지역에 따라 다르며, 다양한 연구와 이에 대한 평가가 이루어지고 있는 점도 공통적이다. 그러나 두 나라 간에는 유사성 속에서도독특한 차이점이 존재하였다. 조선에서는 연구의 사용이 사회적 및 경제적 지위를 반영하는 경향이 있었던 반면, 일본에서는 왕실을 제외하고 개인의 취향에따라 선택되는 경향이 있었다. 이는 당시 양국에서 엄격한 신분질서가 존재했음에도 불구하고 그 구성에는 차이가 있었음을 말해준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the significance of pleasure goods as reflections of the political, economic, social, and cultural landscapes of different countries, focusing on tobacco, which gained considerable popularity in Joseon and Japan. To this end, it compares the structure, composition, and content of two contemporary works: Lee Ok's Yeongyeong from Joseon and Ōtsuki Gentaku's Enroku from Japan. The analysis reveals that the two books employ different narrative styles according to the au thors' purposes. Yeongyeong incorporates literary expressions based on Lee Ok's personal experiences, reflecting the author's subjective consciousness, whereas Enroku focuses on conveying information ob jectively, positioning the author as a neutral informant. Despite these differences, the tobacco cultures of both countries exhibited notable similarities. Discussions on the medicinal effects of tobacco tended to emphasize its psychological and emotional benefits rather than physical treatments. Additionally, both Joseon and Japan acknowledged variations in tobacco quality depending on the region of cultivation, accompanied by research and evaluations. However, there were also distinctive differences between the two countries. In Joseon, the use of tobacco often reflected an individual's social and economic status, whereas in Japan, except for the royal family, tobacco consumption tended to be influ enced by personal preference. This contrast suggests that, despite the presence of rigid social hierarchies in both countries, their class struc tures operated in subtly different ways
