프로이트 종교론의 현대적 재검토: < 강박 행동과 종교 행위 >를 중심으로 = Reconsidering Freud on Religion: with Focus on "Obsessive Actions and Religious Practices"

국문 초록 (Abstract)

〈 강박 행위와 종교 의례 〉는 1907년에 쓰여진 논문으로, 프로이트의 종교에 대한 저작 중 첫 번째 글이다. 이 논문은 강박 신경증 환자의 행동과 종교적 의례 행위의 유사성을 밝힌 것으로, 프로이트의 종교론에서 가장 기초가 되는 생각이 제시된다. 프로이트는 이 글에서 종교 의례에 나타나는 강박증적인 행위 양상에 주목하면서 강박 신경증을 종교 행위의 병리학적 대응물로 보고 신경증을 개인의 종교성으로, 종교를 보편적인 강박 신경증으로 분석할 수 있다는 주장을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 프로이트의 종교론을 현대적 관점에서 다시 검토하고 평가해보려는 시도이다. 기존 종교학에서 프로이트가 흔히 이해되는 방식은 그의 이론의 과학적 성격을 잘 반영하지 않았던 것이었다. 프로이트가 자신의 이론을 검증 가능한 과학적 가설로서 제시하려고 했다는 점에 착안한다면, 우리는 그의 종교론 또한 검증될 수 있는 가설로서 재고할 수 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구는 기존 종교학에서 프로이트 종교론을 받아들이는 방식을 살피고, 그의 종교에 대한 최초의 가설이 종교 이론으로서 어떻게 발전되는지 살펴본 다음, 이것이 후대의 의례 이론과 심리학적 연구들에서 어떻게 언급되고 재고 되는지 살펴보았다. 프로이트가 제시한 최초의 가설은 《토템과 터부》, 《환상의 미래》, 《인간 모세와 유일신교》로 이어지는 그의 종교에 대한 저작 내에서 핵심적인 아이디어로서 발전하였다. 이 과정에서 프로이트는 강박 신경증적 행위를 종교의 중요한 특성으로 보고, 정신분석의 방법을 통해 종교의 기원을 설명한다. 그런데 이때 프로이트의 종교이론 전체는 과학적인 방법에 따라 가설을 발전시켜 나간 것이 아니므로 타당성을 검증하기 어렵다. 반면 최초 가설에 초점을 맞춘다면, 이 가설은 후대 이론에서 의례의 특성과 기능을 밝히는 데 기여하였음을 볼 수 있다. 특히 인지과학과 진화심리학에 영향을 받은 최근의 연구 성과들은 프로이트의 이 가설을 과학적으로 재검토할 가능성을 열어주는데, 이는 나아가 의례 행위 일반의 인지적 적합성 또한 검토할 수 있게 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

"Obsessive Actions and Religious Practices," written in 1907, is Freud`s first writing on religion. It discusses similarities between the actions of patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder and religious ritualistic behaviors, and introduces the idea that serves as the basis of Freud`s theory of religion. Paying attention to compulsive actions appeared in religious rituals, Freud suggested that one may regard obsessional neurosis as a pathological counterpart of ritualistic behaviors, and then describe neurosis as an individual religiosity and religion as an aspect of universal obsessional neurosis. This study is an attempt to reexamine and reevaluate Freud`s theory of religion from the contemporary perspective. As it turns out, the existing ways in which religious studies usually understood Freud did not accurately reflect the scientific characteristics of his theory. When point out the fact that Freud had attempted to present his theory as a verifiable scientific hypothesis, we can reconsider his theory of religion as a verifiable hypothesis. In this regards, the current study examined how Freud`s theory of religion was viewed by existing religious studies, how his first hypothesis on religion developed into the theory of religion, and how it is being mentioned and revisited by later generations of ritual theories and psychological studies. Freud`s first hypothesis had been developed into a salient idea within his writings on religion such as Totem and Taboo, The Future of an Illusion, and Moses and Monotheism. In this process, Freud had considered obsessive-compulsive behaviors as important characteristics of religion, and explained the origin of religion by the method of psychoanalysis. However, Freud`s theory of religion as a whole can be hardly verified about its validity because he did not developed all the hypotheses in the course of scientific methods. On the contrary, when focused on the first hypothesis, it turns out that his theory has contributed to identifying the characteristics and functions of rituals in later generations of theories. In particular, recent achievements in studies influenced by cognitive science and evolutionary psychology are opening up new opportunities for Freud`s aforementioned hypothesis to be scientifically reexamined. Furthermore, that may also allow us to scrutinize the cognitive relevance of ritualized behaviors in general.
