This study has as an objective to examine in what forms and meanings the names of fabric, such as “mumyeong (cotton),” “myeongju (silk fabric),” “bidan (silk satin)” and “mosi (ramie fabric),” are expressed in the eongan, or Hangeul letters from the Joseon Dynasty. Through the process, the names of fabric appearing in the eongan data had oral characteristics, comparing with the names of fabric appearing in other literatures. The names of fabric are usually made from borrowed or unique words which correspond to Chinese characters. Literatures of Korean history include the borrowed words type, such as “mumyeon” and “mumyeong,” and the Chinese words type, such as “mokmyeon,” “myeonpo,” and “mokmyeongpo,” while in the eongan, only “mumyeong” appeared. Moreover in the eongan, various sub-category words referring to “mumyeong” were found, and among them were “mok” in place of “mumyeong” is interesting. The eongan also included the “myeongdi” and “myeongji” type and the “myeongjyu” and “myeongju” type, but in other literatures, more literary expressions “myeongdyu” and “myunjyu” were used. The word “gip” was first found in the eongan to mean “silkworm.” This study examines the Chinese transcription and meanings of the word “bidan.” The dialect version of “mosi” was found in the eongan. Since the eongan as data included not only names of fabric but also many names and their oral expressions of other various daily goods, it can be utilized . not only as an important source of great information but also a good material for researches on names of objects through in-depth studies on the context of letters and the relationship between sender and recipient.
