Lymphedema is a condition of lymph retention beneath the subcutaneous fat layer caused by impaired lymph flow. The volumetry of the limb has commonly used as an objective indicator of lymphedema diagnosis. However, the previous methods acquired low reliability due to large error of results depending on the posture of the patient or the examiner. And they have been unable to measure the localized lymphedema.
In this study, we developed lymphedema measurement system of the upper limb and measuring its volume in real time with kinect sensor which provides 3D depth images using multiple kinects. And we analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of each by the comparison and contrast between of our method with the previous methods.
The results by supposed method achieved comparable accuracy to medical CT, regardless of the posture of the patient or the examiner. Moreover, it was possible to measure the volume of the upper limb at a high speed (within 1 min.) despite of its complex 3D structure.
The proposed system enables accurate and rapid diagnosis for lymphedema and can be set up with efficient cost. The system is expected to detect the change of volume caused by local lymphedema.
