もくろみ動詞 ｢してみる｣の条件形の派生用法― ｢してみると｣の形の場合 ― = Derivational Usages of sitemiruto, a Conditional Form of the Conative Verb sitemiru

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

According to its syntactic position and function, the contemporary Japanese conative verb sitemiru inflects different forms. When expressing a conditional relationship between two events in a complex sentence, siteimuru inflects the conditional form of sitemiruto, sitemireba, sitemitara, and so on as the predicate of the subordinate clause.
Among these conditional forms, the use of sitemiruto demonstrates that there are cases where it expresses causal relationships in a broad sense, but other types of verbs―passive verbs, non-volitional verbs―that are not used in declarative sentences can be used.
Many previous studies have pointed out cases where verbs that are not used in declarative sentences are used with the form of sitemiruto. However, when such verbs take the form sitemiruto, it has yet to be adequately explained what grammatical meaning it represents.
Based on this situation, we consider (1) the usage of sitemiruto as a conditional form of sitemiru, the conative verb, (2) the relationship between the typical usages of sitemiruto and its derived usages, and (3) syntactic features, semantic variations and usages of subordinate sentences found in derived usages of sitemiruto.
As a result, when sitemiruto is used as the conditional form of the conative verb that expresses an action that the subject chooses to change the current reality into the desired reality, the main clause expresses an event that occurs as a result of the action described in the subordinate clause, as well as a state of being that is recognized by the action presented in the subordinate clause. However, when it comes to that sitemiruto loses its features of the conative verb, if sitemiruto is used as a predicate of the subordinate sentence, what is described in the main clause is an unexpected reality for the speaker. So, the main clause expresses the subject’s surprise, bewilderment, or dismay. In such a sentence, sitemiruto functions as a marker indicating that the following sentence will describe the content that expresses the subject’s unprepared mind.
