인구 절벽시대에 대안적 교회개척: 새로운 교회 공동체들(New Ecclesial Communities) 중심으로 = A Study on the Alternative Church Planting Models in the Age of the Demographic Cliff by Focusing on ‘New Ecclesial Communities’

The purpose of this study tries to find out the Alternative Church Planting Model by focusing on ‘New Ecclesial Communities’ in the age of the demographic cliff for the Korean Church. According to Harry S. Dent Jr. who is an American economist, the Korean society confront the era of the demographic cliff in 2010-2018. This demographic change and crisis impacts on the growth of the Korean Church because culture and society are changed rapidly and people who are interested in Christianity are declined or plataued. In this changing time, the traditional church planting strategy is no longer a only way to evangelize unchurched and dechurched people. Therefore, we need to overcome the church of McDonalidization, and then we should build a de-McDonalized church in an age of uncertainty.
I introduce and examine the missiological, theological, sociological, and practical meanings of ‘New Ecclesial Communities’, which is a subset of ‘New Contextual Churches’ from Michael Moynagh’s book (Church in Life: Innovation, Mission and Ecclesiology). According Michael Moynagh, ‘New Ecclesial Communities’ is the Fresh Expressions of Church that was started as an missional church planting movement in England by practicing missional, contextual, formational, and eccleisal approaches. The church is willing to attempt to engage in the public community by listening, serving, and loving neighbors because, without developing relationships with the unchurched and the dechurched, evangelism is impossible in the era of the demographic cliff.
I also examine a taxonomy of ‘the missional church planting movement.’ There are four different approaches of ‘New Contextual Churches’: organic(simple) church, emerging church, new monasticism, and fresh expressions of church. I also explain the relationship between the new contextual church movements and fresh expressions initiative to find similarities and differences, and then consider possibilities to reach out people who live in the community.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인구 절벽을 통한 인구의 고령화는 한국사회에 많은 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상되며 한국교회도 이 변화를 피할 수 없다, 왜냐하면 인구 감소는 한국교회 신앙인구의 감소와 직결되기 때문이다. 한국교회는 인구절벽, 고령화, 신뢰도 하락으로 압축성장의 시대를 지나 압축쇠퇴의 시대를 맞이하고 있다. 이 급격한 변화는 한국교회의 전도와 선교에도 큰 영향을 미친다. 성장위주의 일률적인 전통적 교회 모델이 한계에 직면하게 되었다, 왜냐하면 인구변화는 다양성을 강조하는 문화변화 뿐 아니라 급격한 전도대상의 변화에도 영향을 주기 때문이다. 이 변화의 시점에 교회에 관심이 없는 사람들과 관계를 맺고 전도하기 위해서 성육신적 전도개척 방법이 필요하다. 필자는 그 대안적 교회개척 방법을 영국에 선교학자인 마이클 모이나(Michael Moynagh)가 언급한 ‘새로운 교회 공동체들(New Ecclesial Communities)’에서 찾고자 한다.
서양의 교회는 우리 보다 먼저 사회, 문화, 그리고 전도대상의 변화를 경험하면서 많은 대안적 교회개척 방법을 고민하고 고려했다. 물론, 서양교회들이 적용한 전도개척방법 그리고 대안적 모델들을 그대로 받아드릴 수 없지만, 마이클 모이나의 ‘새로운 상황적 교회들’(New Contextual Churches)을 살펴보고 인구절벽의 시대에 한국적 대안적 교회개척 전략의 가능성을 고민해 보고자 한다. 이 논문은 ‘새로운 상황적 교회들’의 분류, 관계성들과 특징들을 살펴보고, 특별히 상황적 교회들의 예 중에서 상황적(contextual), 선교적(missional), 교육적(educational) 혹은 제자도 중심의, 그리고 교회적(ecclesial) 특징을 갖는 ‘새로운 교회 공동체들(New Ecclesial Communities)’인 교회의 새로운 표현들(Fresh Expressions of Church)이 어떻게 선교적, 신학적, 그리고 실천적 특징들이 있는 가를 살펴보면서 인구절벽시대에 한국교회의 대안적 교회개척 전략을 제시하고 있다.
