The Man of Law’s Tale is a demonstration of religious characteristics in Chaucer’s times, such as pathos and belief in the working of God through history, and his literary virtuosity. The pathetic style in The Man of Law’s Tale, which aims to evoke pity and compassion in the behold and to elicit tears of sympathy, is pervasive and powerful in fourteenth and fifteenth century literature and art. Chaucer’s principal artistic concern in The Man of Law’s Tale is also to produce a strong emotional effect through re-shaping the situations of Trivet’s Constance. Chaucer makes Constance into a passive innocent, alone and helpless, whose recurring plight invites a pathetic response in harmony with her own fearful laments. Above all, it is through the orchestration of multiple voices like Custance’s spirituality and the narrator’s worldliness that Chaucer’s aim for vindicating orthodox medieval doctrines of Christianity is successfully achieved.
