This paper argues that Deborah Smith’s translations of Han Kang’s novels, The Vegetarian and Human Acts into English go beyond a narrow sense of fidelity to the originals, preserving the literary quality while asserting them as independent “literary works” written in English for new readers. To achieve this, Smith negotiates the differences between Korean and Anglophone cultures for new readers. Furthermore, she bridges the wide gap between English writing and Korean writing. Korean writing tends to be more repetitive, emotional and contextual compared to English writing. Smith also highlights the literary qualities of the original texts in her translations by using poetic and lyrical styles, literary expressions, as well as metaphors and imagery, not simply conveying the content of the original writing.
