In this study, to better understand Christian suffering, the researcher interviewed participants who had family members with illnesses to analyze their experiences and the meaning of family illness. Interviews with eight study participants, ranging in age from 21 to 71, led to the following findings: Participants experienced hardship, support, and change through family illness. More specifically, hardship includes psychological hardship, economic hardship, physical hardship, and spiritual stagnation, and help includes physical (caregiving assistance), economic, emotional, and spiritual help. Participants experienced changes in their routines, family relationships, prayers, and values. The meaning of suffering through family illness is a pathway to washing away sings and salvation and a requirement for spiritual growth, but on the other hand, it is also a warning from God or an area beyond their understanding. The God they encountered in their suffering was good, gracious, and loving like a shepherd, offering help and providing a way to escape. The benefits of suffering were also identified, including thankful attitude in the midst of suffering, spiritual growth that brings them closer to God, and character development. This study is significant in that it sheds light on faith and suffering by presenting Christian experiences and interpretations of suffering in times of national and international hardship.
