Occurrence of insects on the transgenic rice plant which is resistant to the herbicide was assessed and compared with other varieties of rice in the fields located at Cheongwon, Suwon and Gwangju in Korea. Transgenic rice (CPPO06) has a protox gene and is resistant to the protox-inhibitor herbicide. The occurrence and population of several major pests such as brown plant hopper, small brown planthopper, whitebacked planthopper, rice green leafhopper, rice stemborer and rice leaf roller, and other insects were investigated in 2011 and 2012. The rice green leafhopper among major pests was observed only in the field of Suwon and Gwangju in 2012. There was no significant difference in the occurrence of rice green leafhopper between CPPO06 and other rice varieties. Various insects except major pests were also observed in all fields but there was no significant difference between rice varieties. To assess eco-safety of transgenic rice CPPO06 using insects, more continuous and laboratory experiments
should be performed.
