대(大)디오니시아 제전(祭典)과 아테네 제국주의: ‘분리를 통한 통합’의 장 = The Great Dionysia and the Athenian Empire: ‘Integration through Separation’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

고전기에 들어 아테네인들에게 비 아테네인은 골칫거리가 되었다. 특히 한달 이상 머무는 외국인인 메토이코이를 아테네 사회에 잘 통합하는 일은 매우 중요했다. 기원전 5세기 후반부터 메토이코이의 숫자가 급격하게 늘어났고, 아테네인들은 종교의식의 힘을 빌어 이 문제를 원만하게 해결하고자 했다. 이들이 선택한 신은 디오니소스였다. 날이 좋은 봄 그리스 내외의 손님들을 초대하여 아테네인들은 외국에서 들어온 신인 디오니소스를 위한 축제, 즉 대디오니시아를 벌였다. 이는 신이 아테네에 받아들여지는 과정을 보여주는 신화와 연관이 있다. 축제에서는 먼저 디오니소스 신상을 아테네의 외곽으로부터 중심의 디오니소스 성소로 모시는 행렬을 펼쳤다. 이 행렬에는 아테네인과비 아테네인이 공히 참여해 서로 다른 지위를 명백하게 했다. 그리고 디오니소스 성소 내의 극장에 도착하여 통합을 이끄는 성격이 서로 다른 두 행사를 벌였다. 밤에는 디오니소스가 문제를 해결하는 방식인 난장이 펼쳐졌다. 그 후 나흘간 연극이 무대에 올려졌으며, 메토이코이나 외국인들도 관람할 수 있었다. 그러나 연극을 관람하는데도 아테네인과 비 아테네인 사이의 차별이 있었다. 아테네인들은 구분을 통한 통합의 방식으로 비 아테네인들을 사회에 받아들였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Athens was a complex society consisting of numerous ethnic groups: a large majority of its inhabitants were not Greek. An increase of metic population may be detected from around 431 BC. The Athenians seem to have become gradually conscious about the metic issue. The Athenians were the defenders of the Athenian empire. Although they have feared that their citizenship may lose its prerogatives, they understood that they should live in harmony with the metics. The Great Dionysia was a festival that clearly defined the Athenians from the non-Athenians. And together with this definition the Athenians emphasized the fact that they are welcoming the outsiders, for the empire has a responsibility to look after the less privileged. They achieved their goal by a clever policy of ‘integration through separation’.
