The most important element in analyzing the animation ‘Yellow Submarine’ is none other than studying The Beatles’ songs. Their songs are well characterized by their own character followed by many different modifiers. One of the outstanding characteristics the Beatles has in their musical language is that the very traits of the motive in the foreground are still applied in the middle ground as well as the background. Appropriate sound effects are also used for each of their expressions. It is also notable that the Beatles’ own ideology is well revealed as well in their songs. At the same time, the Beatles consistently generates fresh and commercial ideas, representing another characteristic of the band. The Beatles’ characteristics found in their songs are directly reflected in the animation, and lead its story. To the Beatles’ experimental sound expressions, the visual combines different art forms such as pop-art and parody. Expressing the intention of the song in the visual, the animation serves as an extension of the expression of the song in the sense that it combines the Beatles’ expression of their songs and an entirely new visual format, beyond its existence as a commercial animation. This particular re-expression of music in visual format was found in Mise-en-scene analysis, step-by-step analysis and the visual expression of lyrics.
By reading this thesis – an analysis on the visualizing and new type music forming process of the modifiers-carrying Beatles songs described by ‘British Invasion’, and ‘new’, through the use of motives, and arrangement for the expression of the songs, and pop-art, op-art and parody for the expression of the visual, combining the new art forms of the time – I hope the readers will be provided with a methodology that helps concretely actualize many possibilities expressing the producer’s intention.

애니메이션 <Yellow Submarine, 1968> 분석을 통한 비틀즈의 음악어법과 영상과의 관계 연구

애니메이션‘Yellow Submarine'분석에서 가장 중요한 요소는 무엇보다 비틀즈의 음악을 연구하는 일이다. 그들의 음악은 비틀즈를 따라 다니는 수많은 수식어 답게 비틀즈의 성격을 잘 들어내고 있다. 그들의 음악어법에는 전경에 있는 모티브의 특징을 그대로 중경과 배경에도 적용하는 것이 큰 특징중의 하나이다. 또 그들의 표현하려고 하는 내용에 맞는 사운드들도 적절히 이용하는 것을 알 수 있다. 비틀즈만의 사상역시 그들의 음악에 가장 잘 들어나는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그러면서도 동시에 상업적이고 신선한 아이디어를 수 없이 쏟아내는 것을 볼 수 있는데 이것 역시 비틀즈만의 특징이다. 그들의 음악에서 나타나는 특징들이 애니메이션에도 그대로 반영돼 애니메이션의 이야기를 이끌어 가는 것을 볼 수 있고, 비틀즈의 실험적인 사운드와 대등하게 영상에서도 팝 아트나 패러디등의 예술 양식들을 접목하는 것을 알 수 있다. 곡에서 표현하고자 하는 의도에 맞는 영상을 표현하며 단순히 상업적인 애니메이션이 아닌 비틀즈의 음악의 표현과 새로운 양식을 접목하는 방식으로 음악을 표현하는 방식의 확장을 보여주는 것을 볼 수 있다. 음악의 표현을 영상으로 다시 표현하는 방식을 미장센분석 방법과 표층적 분석방법, 가사의 표현을 그대로 표현하는 방법등에서 찾을 수 있었다.
‘British Invasion', ’새로운‘등의 수많은 수식어의 비틀즈의 음악과 그 들의 음악을 영상으로 표현해 또 다른 방식의 음악을 표현하는 과정들을 보며 음악을 표현하기위한 모티브의 활용, 화성, 편성, 편곡등의 방법과, 그 음악을 영상으로 표현하기 위한 팝아트, 옵아트, 패러디 등의 방법으로 영상을 표현하는 과정을 보며 의도에 맞게 곡을 표현하고 그 곡을 또 다른 영역인 영상으로, 그 당시의 새로운 예술 양식들을 접목해 표현하는 것을 분석하는 이 논문을 읽음으로 제작자의 의도를 표현하는 많은 가능성을 구체적으로 실현되도록 돕는 하나의 방법이 되기를 기대해 본다.
