로스앤젤레스 한인 타운에서의 지신밟기의 의미 －자아 및 한인 공동체의 정체성 표출과 관련하여－ = The Meaning of Chisinbalki in Los Angeles as an Expression of Korean American Identity

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지신밟기는 정초에 지신을 밟아줌으로써 마을의 평화와 풍작 및 다복을 기원하면서 마을 공동체 단위로 벌이는 굿의 하나이다. 지신을 다스린다는 점에서 공간과 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있으며, 풍작을 기원한다는 점에서 농촌사회 및 농촌 사회 구성원과 관련이 깊다. 그런데, 로스앤젤레스 한인 타운에서의 지신밟기는 그 기원은 한국의 지신밟기에 두고 있는 것이지만 달라진 연행 주체, 연행 공간 및 환경 속에서 1990년 이후 17년 동안 진행되면서 자아 및 공동체의 정체성을 대외적으로 표출하는 의미가 강하게 내포되어 있다. 또한 규칙적인 지신밟기의 연행은 그 거리와 공간을 공연자인 한인들의 거리로 인식하게 하는 기능을 하고 있다.
로스앤젤레스에서의 지신밟기의 의미에 대해서는 연행자의 입장과 외부적 시각을 통해 살펴보았다. 연행자의 입장을 통해 살펴본 지신밟기는 번영과 안녕을 기원하는 의미 이외에 학생들이 공연과 풍물을 익히면서 찾아낸 자아 및 공동체의 정체성을 대외적으로 표출하는 의미가 있음을 알 수 있다. 외부적 시각을 통해서도 지신밟기는 번성, 평화, 공연 및 정체성의 문제와 관련되어 있음을 알 수 있는데, 연행자의 입장과는 달리 한인 타운에서의 학생들의 지신밟기 연행에 대해 긍정적인 평가와 부정적인 평가가 공존하고 있다. 긍정적인 견해를 보인 사람들은 학생들의 지신밟기는 유용할 뿐 아니라 재미있고 흥미로운 공연이며, 전통 민속을 통해 공동체의 정체성을 대외적으로 드러낸 것에 대해 자긍심을 표현하였다. 반면, 부정적 견해를 드러낸 사람들은 성가실 뿐 아니라 볼거리가 없는 공연이고 한인 공동체의 정체성을 드러내어 타민족 공동체와 구분하는 일을 할 필요는 없다는 견해를 보이고 있었다.
로스앤젤레스에서의 지신밟기의 연행은 한국에서와 같이 지신밟기에 참여한 모든 공동체의 대동 통합을 강조하지 않는다. 공동체의 결속을 강조하는 것은 사실이지만 지신밟기에 익숙할 수 없는 타민족 공동체와의 구분과 병행이 동시적으로 일어나고 있다고 할 수 있다.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

Chisinbalki(지신밟기) is a kind of village ritual(마을굿, Maeul-Gut) which is practiced at the beginning of year for the harmony, plenty of harvests, and good luck of the village community through treating the earth spirit. In terms of treating the earth spirit, Chisinbalki is strongly identified with both physical and spiritual spaces of the local people. In terms of praying for good harvests, it is prevalent within the agricultural society and its community. Chisinbalki has been performed in Koreatown, Los Angeles since 1990 by the students from UCLA, UCSB, and UCI in the community which is no longer agricultural or homogenous like in Korea. Indeed, they are making a new tradition of their own in their new homeland.
In this paper, I addressed the issue from two different perspectives: the one of performers and the other of spectators. Chisinbalki is usually performed with Korean folk music called Pungmul(풍물). Interested students participate and form a folk music band, Pungmulpae(풍물패) to perform Chisinbalki. When they perform, they have the opportunity to identify themselves as Korean Americans and show their pride in being Korean Americans in public. In terms of spectators' perspective, on the other hand, there are positive and negative opinions which are closely connected with people's views on multiculturalism in U.S.. Besides those who enjoy foreign cultures or just love most entertainments, those who express positive opinions believe cultural demonstrations like Chisinbalki promote ethnic identity in the multicultural society. In contrast, those who express negative opinions about Chisinbalki may believe that bringing home cultures into U.S. soil does not help them unite as a community or as Americans.
Chisinpalki in Koreatown, Los Angeles does not enhance unification of all of community members who participate in the performance in there, unlike it of Korea. Chisinpalki is like a double wedged sword: unifying Koreans, Korean Americans in the community both spatially and spiritually, which in turn differentiates them the other members of the community.
