공감의 도덕적 가능성을 통해 본 스포츠 윤리 실천 모색 - 마사 누스바움의 감정론을 중심으로 - = Seeking Practices of Sport Ethics through Moral Possibilities of Compassion - Focused on Martha Nussbaum’s Theory of Emotions -

This study explores the possibilities of practicing modern sport ethics focusing on compassion, which is the core of Martha Nussbaum’s theory of emotions. Nussbaum sees compassion as an object of ethical consideration as she approaches emotions from a cognitive perspective. Emotions are treated as a component of moral practices based on cognitive aspects of emotions, such as ‘objectivity’,‘directionality’, ‘belief’, and ‘co-reasoning’, with the emphasis of compassion as the core of moral judgment, not considered as senses or feelings from anon-cognitive perspective that merely reflects a certain physiological level. Compassion is taken as an alternative for practicing sport ethics given that it is in line with the nature of sportsmanship which defines the opponent as an object of respect not an enemy. In order for compassion to meet the requirements for putting sport ethics into practice, a moral motive that would be agreeable to all needs to be presented. Nussbaum suggests 'vulnerability', the common 'essentialism'of human beings, as the one, and compassion can be delivered by understanding it. And all these characteristics can be motivated through the learning of emotions, and programs that enable participants to indirectly experience the pain of the others and foster moral imagination need to be pursued as part ofsport ethics education.
