1920년대 開闢社의 조선지식 수집과 조선연구 토대 구축 －‘조선문화 기본조사’의 추진과정과 내용 분석을 중심으로 = Gaebyeoksa’s Collection of Joseon Knowledge and Building the Foundation of Joseon Studies in the 1920’s – with Focus on the Process and Contents of the ‘Basic Examination of the Joseon Culture’

I analyzed the nature of Cheondogyo Gaebyeoksa’s collection of Joseon knowledge from 1923 till 1925 through the ‘basic examination of the Joseon culture’ and the influence of investigation activities on the Cheondogyo-affiliated intellectuals on Joseon studies. The city desk members of the editorial office of Gaebyeoksa made a tour of the 13 provinces around the country to collect data, and accumulated Joseon knowledge by using human networks for interviews. It started out in 1923 when Gaebyeoksa announced the ‘pan-humanistic nationalism’ and established the direction of the Joseon Movement, and adopted the Sauje as its organization and began the basic examination to expand the contents.
Collection of Joseon knowledge was planned as a means of the cultural movement, and the investigation staff tried to understand the political and economic situation and made a list of figures, events, geography, organizations and customs in the history and culture of Joseon. Most of the collected Joseon knowledge concerned the history of the Joseon era, and items related to the resistance to the ruling system or the activities of Donghak Cheondogyo were emphasized.
Starting from 1925 when the investigation was completed, Magazine Gaebyeok featured the special series to shed new light on Joseon. Also, Byeolgeongon, which was published after discontinuation, contained a lot of articles about the Sahwa Dangjaeng of Joseon and struggles against foreign powers. The ‘basic examination of the Joseon culture’, which started out as a cultural movement, resulted in a change of the editorial policy of Gaebyeok and the Cheondogyo-affiliated intellectuals’ advance into Joseon studies.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

천도교 개벽사가 1923년부터 1925년까지 추진한 ‘조선문화 기본조사’의 조선지식 수집 작업의 성격과, 조사 활동이 천도교 계열 지식인의 조선연구에 미친 향을 분석했다. 개벽사는 편집국 사회부 부원을 중심으로 전국 13도를 순회하며 자료 수합, 인적 네트워크를 활용한 인터뷰 등의 방식으로 조선지식을 축적했다. 이는 1923년 ‘범인간적 민족주의’를 발표하며 조선운동의 방향을 정립하고, 조직적으로 사우제(社友制)를, 콘텐츠 확충을 위해 기본조사를 채택하는 형태로 시작되었다. 조선지식의 수집은 문화운동의 한 방편으로 기획되었으며, 조사 대원들은 정치경 제 상황에 대한 실정 파악과 함께 조선의 역사문화에 대한 인물, 사건, 지리, 단체, 풍속에 대한 목록을 작성했다. 수집된 조선지식은 많은 부분 조선시대사에 관한 것이었고, 지배체제에 저항하거나 동학 천도교 활동에 대한 항목이 강조되었다. 조사가 완료된 1925년부터 잡지 『개벽』은 조선을 재조명하는 기획을 연속적으로 내놓았다. 또한 폐간 이후 출간한 『별건곤』은 조선의 사화(史禍) 당쟁(黨爭), 반외세 투쟁에 대한 글을 다수 수록했다. 문화운동으로부터 시작된 ‘조선문화 기본조사’는 『개벽』의 편집방침 변화와 천도교 계열 지식인의 조선연구 진출과 연결되었다.
