      Although the recent design of elementary school by prize competition has received the affirmative evaluations in that it enhances the quality of educational environment and tries to make the independent educational environment, it has not been recognized as the developmental evaluation because it didn't make the concrete evaluation what was changed by design by prize competition and what features it has in the side of educational environment.
      However, from the point of time that 10 years passed since the design of elementary schools by prize contest has begun, the characteristics and types of architectural planning are classified with the selected works of the design of elementary schools by prize competition, the minimization of trial and error in planning elementary school through the design of elementary school by prize competition is sought in the side of qualitative improvement of educational environment through design contest, the minutes of screening works exhibited containing plan, design examination and improvement matters through the cooperation of East and West Board of Education, Gwangju and design offices selected and the checklists by new construction facility association of school building are collected in order to suggest the data as affirmative and effective design guideline, the types of designs are classified in the side of the whole architectural planning after field survey, evaluation factors of direct and indirect architectural design are summarized with reference to existing preceding research literatures and then the future considerations of design are to be extracted by analyzing the indication and improvement from design screening. In addition, the range of cases are 13 schools for the classification of architectural planning types among the prize winners' works of elementary school design from 1990 to 2000 and 17 schools in Gwangju for examining the distribution of concerns.
      This study also divides the architectural planning types of elementary schools into layout, unit plan and elevation and analyzes them and then the results of the research by analyzing the contents of indication and improvements in examining the design works of elementary school by prize competition divided into five items such as spatial function, engineering, perceptual, visual and location and layout of buildings (29 items in detail) are as follows.
      It is confirmed through the type classification and analysis from the side of architectural planning of elementary school that lately elementary school construction resulted in much development and changes in general compared to the elementary school construction before 1990 and the distribution of much concerns on the spatial function and engineering side of building is shown in architectural planning of elementary school which is to be newly constructed or rearranged, and it is understood that screening committees are dissatisfied with it compared to other items and then much indications and improvement matters are followed. And on other three items, they consider the designers solve the current problems properly and rather it means that designers are concerned on others than the indications by screening committees and the items pointed out by the screening committee should be concentrated.
      This study deals with the results of prize contest, but more detailed and systematic researches on the influences, conditions of use and satisfaction of interior and exterior space of elementary schols which are changed and developed are required
